Being alone was harder than Buffy had thought it would be. It wasn’t just the responsibility of having to find a place to live, and a job so she could pay rent and buy food; it was the sense of isolation.
When she was working it wasn’t so bad, there were people around her and the other waitresses were okay. Even her boss wasn’t so bad. Some of the customers sucked, sexist pigs with groping hands and lewd grins, but she could deal with that. She’d faced down vampires and ugly-ass demons, so she knew she could easily defend herself if she had to. She’d probably lose her job if she put the smackdown on paying customers though, so she resisted the temptation.
Back in her crummy bedsit at night, the emptiness weighed on her, smothering her so she felt she could barely breathe. She missed her mom, missed Giles and her friends, even missed school.
It was true, no one ever really knew what they had until it was gone. What she wouldn’t give to hear one of Xander’s lame jokes, Willow explaining their latest homework assignment, Giles chiding her, or her mum complaining she hadn’t done her chores.
