“What’re you doing?” Jack asked, catching Ianto with an old-fashioned clipboard and pen.
Ianto blushed faintly. “Just running through a basic pre-flight check.” He flipped a switch on the control console, nodded to himself, turned it off again, and noted something down.
“You do know all the pre-flight checks are done by the onboard computers, right? They’ll let us know if there’s a problem with anything.”
“I know.” Ianto’s blush deepened. “It just doesn’t seem right, not checking for myself. I always used to, back home, making sure the SUV was fully stocked with everything we might need, and we wouldn’t run out of petrol in the middle of nowhere.”
“Your efficiency made Torchwood Three run more smoothly than it ever had in over a century of continuous operation,” Jack agreed. “The only times we ever ran out of anything important was when you weren’t there, and we had to fend for ourselves.”
“Nice to know my efforts were appreciated.”
“They were, more than you know. We should’ve told you more often.”
“I was just doing my job.”
“And everyone else’s.”
Ianto nodded. “At times.”
“You don’t have to now.”
“Perhaps not, but it makes me happy.”
“Then carry on.”
