Jack was snooping among Ianto’s things, as he often did while Ianto was getting ready for work, when he came across something he hadn’t noticed before. It was a small, silvery object, shaped a bit like a starfish, or a sunburst, and worn smooth with age.
“What’s this?”
“What’s what?” Ianto emerged from the bathroom, dressed only in his underpants and towelling his hair dry.
“This.” Jack held it out to him.
“Oh. I call it my lucky charm.”
“But you’re not superstitious.”
“So what? I found it in Bute Park on a family outing when I was just a kid, maybe seven or eight. Dad told me it was rubbish, and I should throw it away, but I liked it, so I shoved it in my pocket instead. I used to have it attached to my keyring, but it doesn’t fit on the one I’ve got now.”
Turning it over slowly in his fingers, Jack examined it more closely. “You know it’s alien, right?”
Ianto stopped in the middle of pulling a sock on. “Alien?”
“Yep; I’ve seen similar ones before. It’s from the Kermidon System.”
“It’s not dangerous, is it?”
“No. Like you said, it’s a lucky charm.
