Joyce doesn’t think she’ll ever be able to get her head around the reality of her daughter’s life. Vampires and demons are real, and Buffy is responsible for killing them to protect the world. It’s a ridiculous concept, made even more so when she considers how young Buffy is; only seventeen, and she’s already been slaying for several years.
It's not right, no child should have to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders, and yet according to Mr Giles, it’s been that way since the beginning of civilisation. One girl in all the world, an endless succession of them, burdened with a destiny they never asked for.
How can Joyce be anything but terrified for her little girl? Yet at the same time, now that she’s seen her daughter in action, fighting vampires and that snake creature, saving those poor babies, she can’t help but admire her. It’s clear Buffy knows how to do her job, that she’s good at it, and that makes Joyce proud. She already knew her daughter was smart and capable, but now she sees how brave and selfless she is. Buffy can take care of herself.
It doesn’t make Joyce any less afraid though. The girl who died before Buffy ran away was a Slayer too, younger even than Buffy is now, her life cut short. The same thing could happen to Buffy, anytime she goes on patrol. Her friends and Mr Giles help as much as they can, but they aren’t Slayers, they don’t have Buffy’s strength and skill.
Part of Joyce wants to pack up everything, her daughter included, leave Sunnydale behind, and go somewhere else, just start over where they’ll be safer, but what good would that really do? Is there anywhere in the world that’s safe for a Slayer? At least here Buffy has support from people who love her almost as much as Joyce does, people willing to risk their lives alongside their friend.
Perhaps it’s time Joyce started trusting Buffy more. Letting go will be hard, but she needs to let Buffy stand on her own.
