Lying on his back, Ryo listened to the deep, booming thunder of waves crashing against the rocks at the base of the cliffs. Beside him on their picnic blanket, Dee jerked awake.
“Is it gonna rain?” he asked, peering blearily up at the arch of blue sky overhead, decorated with a few fleecy white clouds, like sheep in a meadow.
Ryo laughed. “I doubt it.”
“So where’s the thunder comin’ from?”
“Tide’s coming in.” A gust of warm wind buffeted the two men as Dee sat up. Waves hammered at the cliff below so hard they could feel the vibration through the ground.
“Damn, I felt that! Sea must be pretty rough.”
“Nothing in the way for hundreds of miles to slow it down.”
Scrambling upright, Dee stretched, took a couple of steps closer to the edge, and looked across to the headland at the other side of the inlet, watching waves break against it. “Wonder what it would be like up here during a storm,” he mused.
“Wet.” Ryo sat up, grinning at his lover.
“Well, yeah, but the sea down below, thunder and lightnin’ overhead, wind howlin’… It would be pretty wild.”
“Exhilarating, but I think I’ll pass.”
