Hanging up the phone, Dee set his pen down on his notebook and sighed, gazing longingly out the office window at a balmy spring day. “This sucks,” he grumbled. “Days like this, there should be a law against makin’ people work, especially indoors.”
Pushing away from his own desk, Ryo swivelled his chair to look at his partner. “You think the whole city should just shut down whenever the weather’s nice? Does that include essential services like hospitals, the fire department, childcare, public transport, and anywhere serving food or drink?”
Dee frowned. “’Course not. Obviously some places would haveta stay open for business.”
“And the police department? If we shut down, even for a few hours, the criminals would have a field day.”
A scowl replaced the frown as Dee slumped back in his seat. “Fine, you’ve made your point. Gotta maintain law and order, or try to anyway.”
“Think yourself lucky you don’t work some nine to five office job.” Ryo spun back to his work. “At least we don’t have to stay at our desks our entire shift. Sooner or later, we’ll have to get out on the street, running down leads.”
“Yeah, guess we’re luckier than some.”
