In theory, it was possible for practically anything to get sucked through the Rift, but Ianto had to wonder about this.
There’d been an alert perhaps forty minutes ago, and according to the data Tosh had collected, something of moderate size had come through. Since Gwen and Owen were already out dealing with a Weevil sighting, and Jack was in the middle of a phone conference with a UNIT general who was a stickler for protocol, Ianto had opted to do reconnaissance by himself and call for backup if it became necessary.
The trouble was, he couldn’t make up his mind whether or not he needed assistance, or what kind would be warranted. He was still standing there, occasionally circumnavigating the problem, when Jack contacted him via his Bluetooth earpiece.
“Ianto! Tosh says there’s been radio silence from your end. Feel like updating us on the situation?”
Sighing, Ianto shook his head. “I’d love to, but right now I’m still trying to figure out what the situation is.”
“Have you located what came through?”
“Not entirely sure. There’s something here, but I can’t for the life of me think how the Rift could have brought it.”
“Oookay,” Jack drawled. “What does it look like? Describe it.”
“That’s easy enough; it’s a hole.”
“A whole what?” Jack sounded confused, which was only fair; Ianto was feeling somewhat burdened by confusion himself.
“No, Jack, a hole. In the ground,” he added helpfully. “According to my scanner, it’s approximately two metres across, and five metres deep, and someone’s not going to be very happy, considering it’s smack in the middle of the seventh green at Cardiff Golf Course.”
“A hole?” Jack repeated.
“I know, it’s hard to believe, but I promise you I’m not imagining it; I’m looking into it right now. From a safe distance. I don’t particularly want to fall in; I don’t have a ladder with me.”
“That’s…” Jack trailed off.
“Weird, I know. I’m still trying to figure out whether I should fence it off or try to arrange for it to be filled in. I mean, it’s not like I can fold it up, load it into the SUV and bring it back to the Hub. What would we want with a medium-sized hole anyway?”
“Uh…” Ianto could practically hear the cogs grinding in Jack’s brain. “Maybe it’s not the hole that came through the Rift, but whatever made the hole.”
“I thought of that, but according to my scanner, there’s nothing in it, aside from air.”
“Okay, perhaps what came through was a small grenade, and it exploded on contact, leaving a hole behind.”
“Except that I’m not detecting any fragments, or chemical residue. And it’s a very neat hole.”
Even when Jack and Tosh arrived to check it out, they couldn’t say what might have made it. It was simply a nice, tidy, if inconvenient hole.
Jack smiled wryly. “We’re overlooking the obvious. Golf course, hole. Maybe it belongs here, and something just made it bigger.”
