It wasn’t like Buffy had deliberately tried to get herself kicked out of school. Again. She hadn’t even been thinking about school when she’d left, or about what might happen when she came back to Sunnydale, if she ever did. She’d been grieving and hurt, her head filled with thoughts of what she’d had to do to keep the world from getting sucked into Hell, who she’d had to sacrifice, and her ears had still been ringing with her mom’s angry words. School hadn’t even rated an afterthought; it hadn’t seemed important.
It was though. She needed to graduate if she was to have any chance of going to college, which she kind of wanted to do if only because it would buy her more time to think about the future she might not even have. Only she’d been suspected of murder, and although that misunderstanding had been cleared up before she’d left town, that nasty little troll Principal Snyder had used the suspicion to have her expelled. Maybe she should have expected that; he’d never liked her.
Getting accepted back into Sunnydale High was proving more complicated than it should have been. Snyder was digging his heels in, smugly certain that he could keep her out no matter what her mom said or did. It had gotten to the point where her mom was seriously considering enrolling her in a private girls’ school, which in Buffy’s opinion would be a fate worse than death.
She couldn’t face starting over somewhere else. Sunnydale High was familiar, comfortable like a baggy old t-shirt. Her friends were there, and Giles, with his collection of musty old books and his arsenal of weapons. There were even a few teachers she kind of liked. She wanted her life back the way it was before.
