Someone, a long time ago, had given Dee what was supposed to be sage advice. He couldn’t remember now who it had been, just some guy he’d worked with; maybe one of the detectives at his first precinct, back when he’d been a rookie fresh from the academy. Anyway, who it had been didn’t matter; the important thing had been the advice, which he’d tried his best to follow until he’d realised it was a pile of crap.

Basically, it had been a warning not to get romantically involved with anyone he worked with. Not because the police department frowned on fraternisation, although that was true enough, but because, in the words of that long ago colleague: “You’ll get no privacy, no freedom. Imagine datin’ someone and then havin’ to be around them all day at work. It would be a nightmare, they’d constantly be in your business; every time you so much as looked at anyone else, they’d accuse you of cheatin’. They’d expect you to have lunch with them every day instead of hangin’ out with your friends, and as for havin’ a couple of beers after work with the guys… Forget it. Naw, never mix work with relationships. Gotta keep the two far apart for the sake of your sanity.”

Dee chuckled to himself. Maybe that was true for a certain kind of guy, the kind who wanted a little woman tucked safely away at home while they flirted with every attractive somebody they met, but Dee had never been that way. Not that he hadn’t indulged in flirting and spreading himself around back when he was younger and mostly looking for a good time rather than anything serious. Hell, he still flirted, probably always would, not that it meant anything; some old habits were just harder to break than others. But keeping his work separate from his personal life made no sense to him, not when he spent so much of his time working.

Maybe the problem with most guys was that they weren’t as in love with their significant others as they thought they were, and could only stand being around them for a few hours at a time. Not that Dee was judging them or anything; different strokes for different folks, takes all kinds to make a world, and all that. He, on the other hand, was never happier than when he was with the man he loved.

Right from the start, working together had been great. Ryo was good company, smart, funny, and dedicated to the job. Dee was, technically, the senior partner and yet in those first few months he’d learned as much from Ryo about being a cop as Ryo had learned from him, which had been quite a turn-on. Ryo Maclean was way more than just a pretty face and a gorgeous bod; there was a sharp mind in there too, and intelligence was sexy as hell. Over time, they’d come to respect each other, and a close friendship had developed.

Things had gotten even better when they’d become lovers, although working with the man who set his engine revving like crazy could be a bit distracting. Dee had learned to deal with that though, keeping things mostly professional during work hours, or at least when they were actively investigating a case. If they were just doing paperwork or whatever, he cut himself some slack, indulging in a bit of fantasising over what they might get up to later on at one of their homes, or in the file room if he could persuade his partner to accompany him down there for a spot of… research. For the most part though, he managed to keep his mind on the job, even if his body sometimes had other ideas.

Then, just when he’d thought life was already as good as it could possibly get, Ryo had agreed to move in with him, which meant Dee now had the delectable Detective Maclean with him pretty much around the clock, seven days a week, at work and at home, and how could that NOT be a good thing? They worked together, ate together, lived together, slept together, in every sense of the word, did the chores together… Yeah, they had their fights and disagreements, but they made sure to never go to bed angry, even if it meant staying up half the night to hash something out, and to leave arguments at home, unless they had to do with work.

One of the best things about being in a relationship with his work partner was that neither of them had to explain when they’d had a bad day, because they already knew the details. They could be there for their partner, supporting each other through everything the job threw at them, and celebrating their victories together. They could talk about work without having to censor themselves, because most of the time they were working the same cases.

It wasn’t as if they were joined at the hip though. There were still times they were assigned different shifts, one of them heading home as the other was arriving for work. They still had their own friends, spending time with them separately, and they indulged in their individual hobbies without feeling the need to drag their lover along with them every time, although the invitation was always there. In short, they managed to live their own lives despite spending most of their time together. They still found plenty to talk about even after working an eight-hour shift, while being equally capable of spending the evening in companionable silence, each of them doing their own thing.

Dee couldn’t imagine ever getting tired of Ryo’s company, and he knew Ryo felt the same. They slotted together seamlessly in every aspect of their lives as if they’d been purposely designed that way, and maybe they had. Dee believed in fate, so maybe they were always destined to find each other.

Working together, living together, loving together, he and Ryo were partners in every way imaginable, and thinking back, it made Dee feel kinda sorry for the guy who’d told him work and relationships didn’t mix, ‘cause he’d had no idea how wrong he was. There was nothing better than being able to share every part of your life with the one you loved, holding nothing back. Maybe there’d be fewer failed relationships if people learned how to work together.

The End
