It seemed small wonder to Giles that Americans were angry and erratic so much of the time. They drank prodigious amounts of coffee, day and night. So much that their blood was probably fifty percent caffeine, keeping them awake at night, ensuring that they were permanently exhausted and agitated. High blood pressure among them must be at epidemic levels.
The British, on the other hand, sensibly preferred tea. It was soothing, calming, and could fix most problems, if only by relaxing one enough to be able to think clearly and logically about the issue at hand.
A hot cup of tea, even on a hot day, was the perfect antidote to the stresses of living and working among Americans. Giles didn’t even have to go to the staffroom to brew up since he was able to keep everything he needed in his office behind the library’s desk.
There were, however, times when coffee served a useful purpose, when he needed to be alert, when being tense was an asset rather than a liability and a health risk. Tea, for all its excellent qualities, did not sharpen the senses the way a cup of coffee did. If only coffee tasted better.
