“We’re being sucked in!” The Doctor shouted over the whining engines. “I can’t stop it!”
He and Amy could have escaped the doomed spacecraft by jumping in the TARDIS and flying away, but there wasn’t time to get the ship’s crew and passengers aboard, and the Doctor couldn’t bring himself to abandon over a thousand innocent souls.
“Can’t you… I don’t know, reverse the polarity or something?”
The Doctor huffed. “You humans and your science fiction. That stuff never actually works!”
“You got a better idea?”
“Not right now.” The Doctor fumbled at the controls. “Well I never. It worked!”
