Whatever Ryo had expected about being in a relationship with another man, it wasn’t this. Dee was a shamelessly macho guy, the tough, capable, never show fear or pain type, but it turned out there was another side to him, an equally shameless but totally unexpected romantic side.

He still loved his sports, would sit glued to the TV screen, cheering his team and cursing the refs. He still loved to down a beer or three with the guys, still liked his smokes, although he was cutting back, and he loved sex, which was no surprise at all, but in the afterglow, instead of reaching for a cigarette, he preferred to reach for Ryo. Dee, it seemed, was a snuggler.

It never mattered to him that they were both sweaty and sticky after an energetic bout. He would cuddle up close, basking in their shared warmth, sometimes wanting kisses, sometimes wanting to talk, and sometimes simply wanting to hold and be held.

The few women Ryo had dated over the years had usually wanted to cuddle after sex, which had invariably made Ryo vaguely uncomfortable. He’d decided that must mean he didn’t enjoy snuggling, but now he wondered if it was just that he’d found female bodies a bad fit, because with his arms around Dee the two of them seemed to slot neatly together with no soft, squishy bits getting in the way. Dee was firm, solid, familiar, and snuggling with him made Ryo feel loved.

Best of all though was settling down to sleep, Dee pressed up against his back, one arm wrapped around him. Before Dee, spooning had sounded weird, two bodies nestled together in the middle of a big bed when they’d surely be more comfortable stretched out and making good use of the ample space.

As with so many things, turned out he was wrong. Even if they fell asleep one on each side of the bed, somehow they’d always wind up tangled together in the middle, drawn together in their sleep like they were magnetised.

On the nights Ryo slept alone, he missed Dee’s warmth, the arms and legs draped across him, pinning him to the mattress, Dee’s breath on the back of his neck, Dee’s hand on his chest, over his heart. He didn’t even mind getting a mouthful of Dee’s hair on nights when Dee wanted to be the little spoon. Macho he might be, at least to the outside world, but their job was stressful and at times traumatic. If Dee needed comforting, Ryo was happy to oblige. Loving someone was all about give and take; if one person did all the giving and the other did all the taking, the relationship would be doomed to failure. There had to be balance.

“You’re thinkin’ too loud,” Dee mumbled against the back of Ryo’s shoulder, his arm tightening across his lover’s chest as he tried to pull him even closer.

“Sorry. Just thinking how good this feels. I never used to like snuggling, guess that’s because I hadn’t found the right person.”

“And now you have.” It wasn’t a question; Dee was that sure of himself. It made Ryo chuckle.

“Yes, I guess I have, I just wasn’t looking in the right places before. We fit together as if we were designed to, like…”

“Spoons?”

“I don’t think that’s why spoons were made that shape. They were designed to spoon stuff up, the fitting together thing is just a happy coincidence.”

A huff of laughter stirred the hairs at the nape of Ryo’s neck. “Don’t think we really need an analysis of spoon design right now.”

“You started it, I can’t help the direction my thoughts go.”

“How ‘bout you just stop thinkin’ and go to sleep? Or if you’re not sleepy yet, we could go another round.”

“Hornball,” Ryo grumbled, trapping Dee’s hand against his chest to keep it from wandering.

“I can’t help where my thoughts go either, ‘specially not when we’re lyin’ here like this.”

“Excuses,” Ryo murmured, relaxing into the warmth of Dee’s embrace, eyes closing. “I’m pretty sure my thinking was quieter than your talking.”

“Fine, I’ll stop talkin’ if you stop thinkin’. How ‘bout that?”

“I’ve never been all that good at turning my brain off.”

“I’ve noticed.” Dee pressed a kiss to Ryo’s bare shoulder. “Sleep, or we’ll both be useless at work tomorrow.”

“Mm,” Ryo sighed, making a conscious effort to relax. He vaguely wondered if maybe spoons had been designed to mimic people snuggling like this instead of the other way around. Just one more mystery he’d probably never have an answer to.
