After the week he’d had, all Ryo wanted was a quiet night in. Maybe he’d even go to bed early and relax with the book he’d started reading two weeks ago and hadn’t touched since. It was an appealing thought, especially since Bikky was spending the night at Lai’s place. They were working on a project for school.
“Penny for your thoughts?” Dee asked, catching up to Ryo as they made their way up to the squad room. They’d just come from visiting a crime scene.
“Just wishing our shift was over already.” Ryo smiled tiredly. “Have you noticed how some weeks seem longer than others? This one feels like it’s already lasted a month.”
“Yeah, and I could swear there’ve been more than eight hours to a shift.”
“You’d be right,” Ryo teased. “We worked ten hours yesterday.”
“Is that all? Felt way longer than that. So, what’re ya gonna do when we clock off in…” Dee checked his watch. “One hour and thirty-seven minutes?”
“Go home, order takeout, and get an early night with a good book.”
“Alone?” Dee sounded surprised.
“It’s a lot easier to have a quiet night in without company.”
“Yeah, but…”
“Don’t you ever have days where you just want to shut the world outside your door and not have to worry about pleasing anyone but yourself?”
“I guess, but I’d still rather please you.”
“Hornball. I just want one night where I’m not a cop, a dad, or a lover, okay?”
“Fine, I get the message.” Dee nudged Ryo lightly with his elbow. “But if ya change your mind, ya know where to find me. Doesn’t matter how late it is.”
“I appreciate the offer, but I really do just want to relax and read tonight.”
Dee shrugged. “Can’t blame me for tryin’.”
