As plainclothes detectives, if they weren’t working undercover, Dee, Ryo, and their colleagues in the SCU were expected to wear a suit a minimum of three days each working week.

According to Commissioner Rose, there’d been a survey carried out a few years earlier. From the data collected it had been concluded that the general public’s confidence in the NYPD increased if the officers despatched to investigate crimes were smartly dressed.

The main downside was the expense, suits cost a lot more than casuals, but with a moderate amount of care, a decent suit should last a few years, so the rule was mostly tolerated.

Today was supposed to be a suit day, but Ryo took one look out the window and put his foot down.

“There’s no way I’m wearing a suit in this weather!” The sky was a hard, bright blue, devoid of clouds, and the forecast on the radio said temperatures of over 100F were expected. “It’s far too hot out.”

Dee smirked. “You’re turnin’ into quite the rebel. Rose is probably gonna say I’m a bad influence on ya.”

“It’s not rebellion, Dee, it’s common sense. Wearing a suit and tie is just asking for heatstroke.” Ryo turned to grin at his partner. “If anyone’s a rebel, it’s you.”

“Yep!” Dee was unfazed. “I’m a card-carryin’ rebel without a cause.”

“I can believe that. You probably rebelled against all of Mother’s rules.”

“Oh yeah, got myself in a lot of trouble when I was a kid.” Dee smiled, remembering.

“I can believe that. Mother’s told me stories.”

“How about you? Were you a rebellious teen?” Then Dee shook his head. “Nah, I can’t see it. You were probably a teacher’s pet, the kid that never got in trouble at school, never got grounded at home, always did as he was told.”

Ryo laughed at that. “I wasn’t a paragon of good behaviour, Dee, just a regular kid. Maybe I didn’t get in as much trouble as some, but I got grounded when I was fourteen for smoking grass. Got so high my dad had to get the ladder to fetch me down from the roof.”

“Seriously?” Dee stared at his lover, wide-eyed.

“The only time I ever did drugs. Thought I was Superman or something. Luckily, dad got to me before I tried to fly. Then I got detention at school for a week after letting all the air out the headmaster’s tires. I was protesting; he refused to authorise funding to have the track re-surfaced. It was dangerous to run on; one of the track team almost broke his ankle when he stepped in a pothole.”

“Quite the crusader, weren’t ya?” There was pride in Dee’s tone.

“Don’t know about that. Oh, and I set fire to the science lab, but that was an accident. I left a magnifying glass by the window.” Ryo blushed.

“Never knew ya had such a rebellious streak. So, no suits this week? We’ll rebel together.”

“Sounds good to me.”
