Dee wasn’t a coward, never had been. If he was, he’d be useless at his job. With cool, calm determination he’d faced down more armed gunmen, knife-wielding maniacs, and thugs with baseball bats than he could remember. Okay, maybe he wasn’t always cool and calm, that part was difficult when dealing with the kinds of criminals the SCU were tasked with apprehending, but he didn’t panic and run away. He got the job done.

So, not a coward, but there were times he felt like one. Snakes terrified him, and as for ghosts…

Such things never bothered his lover. Ryo’s biggest phobia was spiders, yet he still caught the damned things, dropping them out the window, rather than giving in to his fear. If Dee was a brave man, and he believed he was, then Ryo was braver.

As far as Dee could see, the main reason for Ryo not being afraid of ghosts was that he didn’t believe in them. Perhaps being a non-believer made the ghosts avoid him, so he was never troubled by their presence. What sucked was that Ryo seemed to find Dee’s perfectly rational fear amusing.

“I know you’ve never seen a ghost, but I have, more than once,” Dee grumbled. “I’m not crazy, not imaginin’ things, and I don’t need my eyes testin’. You don’t believe, that’s up to you, but stop tryin’ to convince me you’re right and I’m wrong. You don’t know everything!”

Ryo sighed. “You’re right, I’m sorry, it’s not fair of me to make fun of you. It’s just… Why d’you think every old building must be haunted?”

“I don’t. There’s plenty of fallin’ down buildings I got no problem with, but some of ‘em just feel… wrong, like there’s somethin’ watchin’ from the shadows, and I’m not talkin’ about rats.”

“No, you’re talking about malevolent spirits.”

Dee shook his head. “Not necessarily malevolent, sometimes just… creepy. Some places are colder than they should be, or too quiet, or the air feels kinda heavy.”

“Like here?”

“Yeah, like here. I can’t explain it, and I know ya don’t believe me, but there’s someone here besides us. I can feel it.”

“So you’re just gonna stay out here while I search the place?”

“No! Just ‘cause I’m scared of ghosts doesn’t make me a coward. If you’re goin’ in, so am I.”

“Okay then.” Ryo stepped inside and Dee followed.

They were halfway along the main corridor, entering yet another abandoned apartment, when Dee saw something in the center of the room, a pale figure, looking right at him and shaking her head. He didn’t hesitate. Grabbing Ryo, he pulled his lover back, just as the ceiling came crashing down right where he’d been standing. Clinging to each other, they stumbled back out onto the sidewalk, coughing from the dust.

“Thanks for that.” Ryo wiped his eyes. “If you hadn’t noticed the ceiling was about to collapse…”

“I didn’t.” Dee smiled weakly. “The ghost warned me. You oughta be thankin’ her.”
