Freya wanted strawberries, and why not? Merlin had told her to choose.
“Anything you want,” he’d said, because he could do that small thing for her, and he’d do anything at all if only it would bring a smile to her lips. She looked so lost, lonely, and scared, and the way she looked at him, as if yearning for a reason to hope, tugged at his heart. She was too young, too beautiful, to be so sad.
Gathering his magic, he focused on his cupped hands, held the image of what was wanted clear in his mind, spoke a single word, and… He felt the surge of magic pass through him, parted his hands to reveal…
Something hadn’t gone quite right, because as Freya pointed out, it wasn’t a strawberry he held.
“It’s the right colour.” So his effort hadn’t been a complete failure; he’d made Freya laugh, her eyes sparkling with delight, and maybe that was better than getting the spell exactly right. This was how she should always look, free of the sorrow that burdened her.
Besides, what better gift could he offer her than a red rosebud about to come into full bloom? It was as lovely as she was, its colour matching the soft blush that touched her cheeks, and his heart swelled as he handed it to her.
No matter what happened, he could never regret freeing her from the bounty hunter’s wagon. She was just a girl. He’d dare anything for her sake.
