Gwen poked her head into Jack’s office. “Are you ready?”

“Yep!” Jack beamed at her as he picked up his coat, which was draped over the back of a chair. “Let’s go!”

“You do know it’s hot out, right?”

“Of course I know, we wouldn’t all be going on a picnic if it was cold and wet, but it’s not THAT hot.”

Jack was accustomed to hot weather, having grown up on the Boeshane Peninsula. Temperatures never got as high in Cardiff as they did on his homeworld, but the forecast for today was for sunshine, blue skies, and temperatures in the low eighties Fahrenheit. Since the Rift looked set to be dormant for a few days, it had been decided that the team should make the most of the good weather by packing a picnic lunch and getting out in the fresh air for a few hours. Their unfinished paperwork could wait until later; it wasn’t going anywhere.

“Fine, it’s up to you, but don’t complain to the rest of us if you get too hot wearing your coat.”

“Who said anything about wearing it?” Jack frowned, sounding puzzled.

“Ianto already put a couple of picnic blankets in the car, if you were thinking we’d need your coat to sit on,” Gwen told her boss.

Although he wasn’t as good at eyerolls as Ianto, Jack gave it a good try. “My Coat is not a surrogate picnic blanket. I just don’t see why we get to out and enjoy ourselves in beautiful weather while my Coat has to stay here in the Hub, all by itself. Doesn’t seem fair if it only goes out in cold, wet, or windy weather. Besides, what if there’s an emergency, a Weevil sighting, or an invasion? Hostile aliens aren’t going to wait patiently while I fetch my Coat.”

“Have it your way, bring your coat on our outing if it makes you happy.” Gwen smiled indulgently. “Never known anyone be so daft over an old coat. Not that you don’t look good in it, but…”

Jack cut Gwen off. “This is not just some old coat, it’s a genuine vintage military greatcoat, and it has feelings!” He stalked out of his office, Coat draped over one arm, and strode into the underground garage, Gwen scurrying along behind him. Throwing himself into the front passenger seat, Jack slammed the door as Gwen scrambled into the back.

Ianto raised an eyebrow. “What’s put you in bad mood?”

“Gwen thinks I shouldn’t bring my Coat because it’s hot out.” Jack was pouting.

“Well that’s just daft! I’m sure Coat will enjoy a few hours in the sunshine. Hang it from a branch, let it catch the breeze and get a good airing.” Ianto patted Coat.

“Exactly! At least you understand. Coats are people too.”

“You’re both nutters!” Gwen shook her head. “You talk like the bloody coat’s alive or something.”

On Jack’s lap, Coat’s sleeve flipped up, flashing a shiny cuff button at Gwen.

She screamed.
