With the whole test drive thing, Dee had believed he was finally beginning to make real progress with his flighty would-be lover. He’d gotten Ryo right where he’d wanted him since the day they’d met, stretched out on Ryo’s comfy king-sized bed, with only a crisp set of PJs between himself and his partner’s delectably smooth, pale skin.
Victory had been within his grasp as he’d gradually peeled away that last layer of protection, lavishing attention on every inch of Ryo’s body as it was exposed to his questing lips and tongue, touching and tasting. He’d thought himself in heaven, about to claim Ryo as his, only to have time called on the play when his damned phone had brought proceedings to a grinding halt.
Maybe he should’ve made sure it was turned off before they’d gotten started, but it was just as well he hadn’t because then they wouldn’t have been able to ride to the rescue. Tracing the phone call was what had given them Carol’s location.
Unfortunately for Dee, from the moment the phone had buzzed into life, everything had descended into a kind of barely controlled chaos, resulting in them hurriedly throwing their clothes on before dashing off to save their Princess from the clutches of the murderous psycho who’d taken her captive.
Thankfully, they’d gotten Carol back with relatively minor injuries, just cuts, bruises, and a badly sprained ankle. She was going to hurt for a while, and there’d probably be nightmares down the road, but she was alive and the monster who’d abducted her and murdered at least six other young girls was behind bars where he belonged. If Dee had his way, the bastard would never see the light of day again.
Dee had to admit it had been a good night’s work, despite the fact that it had completely derailed his carefully planned seduction of the fair Ryo Maclean. All cops understood that sometimes duty had to come before pleasure, and he’d figured they could pick up where they’d left off in a day or two. After all, Ryo had gotten a taster, however brief, of what was on offer, and Dee was in no doubt that his partner had been enjoying it, judging by the little gasps of pleasure he’d been making before they were so rudely interrupted. He was bound to want more. Right?
Wrong.
Dammit, why did Ryo have to be so frickin’ stubborn? They’d had some serious forward momentum going on, but now he hadn’t just slammed on the brakes, it was as if he’d gone into reverse. Somehow that one step forwards had resulted in several very deliberate steps back on Ryo’s part. What was the opposite of progress? Because that was where they were at right now.
Dee couldn’t fathom what had gone wrong. Ryo might have been a little reluctant to agree to the test drive in the first place, but he’d been enjoying it, that had been obvious, so why was he being so standoffish now? Okay, so having JJ and Bikky burst in on them had been a bit off-putting, but at that point they hadn’t actually been doing anything, having already been pulled up short by Carol’s phone call. Since that night though…
Ryo was avoiding Dee outside of work, and when they were together, he pulled away any time Dee so much as brushed against him. There hadn’t even been any kisses lately! Not a single smooch, or even one of Ryo’s spontaneous and affectionate pecks on the cheek. It was unnatural!
After months of laboriously scaling the mountain of Ryo’s defences, it seemed Dee had lost his last foothold and tumbled back down to the bottom, with no option but to start the ascent all over again. And he’d do it, willingly, because after getting so close to tasting heaven there was no way he was gonna just throw in the towel. It took more than a little setback to put Dee Laytner off his stride!
Ryo had simply been a bit spooked. Perhaps the sensations inspired by the aborted test drive had been too overwhelming for him to handle after going without for… however long it had been. Years, at least; Dee knew for a fact that Ryo hadn’t been with anyone since they’d met. All he needed was to get his partner out of reverse and start him moving in the right direction again, but what was the best way of accomplishing that?
First thing to do would be to allow his baby some breathing room, give him time to calm down and think about how good Dee had made him feel before the test drive had been derailed. Then maybe he’d be able to gradually coax Ryo’s foot off the gas until he came to a halt and stopped pulling away every time Dee came near him. At that point, continuing the car analogy, he’d be safely out of reverse and in neutral. From there, Dee could hopefully ease his partner into first gear and slowly start them moving forwards again.
The most important thing would be to avoid pushing; he’d let Ryo set the pace for a while. Occasional gentle touches, but nothing overtly sexual: a hand on the shoulder, a pat on the back, strictly above waist level, a nudge of the elbow, a shoulder bump… Stick to safe territory until he stopped accidentally triggering Ryo’s fight or flight response. It might take a while, and a lot of patience, but Dee would get them back to where they’d been before the whole test drive fiasco, and then… Whelp, he’d figure out the best way to cross that bridge when they got there.
The End
