“Can’t you stop it doing that?” Jack bellowed, hands over his ears in an effort to block out the annoying sound. It wasn’t particularly loud, in fact it was barely audible in the accepted sense, just above the range of most people’s hearing, but it was the kind of irritating insect whine that set teeth on edge and seemed to vibrate through every nerve.
“I would if I could!” Tosh snarled back at him. “If you’ve got any suggestions, I’d be happy to hear them, but this stupid thing doesn’t have an off switch!”
No one showed the slightest surprise at the normally mild-mannered tech genius’s uncharacteristic outburst. After almost thirty minutes of torment, the entire team was feeling jumpy and bad-tempered, including Myfanwy, who was screeching incessantly from her aerie, and Janet who, even from where she was housed in the cells, could still be heard keening in counterpoint.
“It doesn’t have an on switch either, but you still turned it on!” Jack wasn’t accepting any excuses.
“Not on purpose!”
Ianto sidled past Jack, sporting ear-protectors from the firing range. “Excuse me!” He wheeled Tosh’s chair aside before smashing a mallet into the device.
Silence fell.
“There. Problem solved.”
