The Doctor sat on the shore, bare toes digging into damp sand, staring out across the gently rolling waves towards the distant horizon. There was no one else here on this remote, desolate stretch of beach, not another living soul within miles, but even if he’d been surrounded by people he still would have felt just as alone.
Rose was gone, safe and well in a parallel universe but trapped there, permanently. There’d be no way back; he’d never see her again. Perhaps it was better that way. She was with her family, but he was alone.
He missed her.
