Dee sighed, feeling somehow unburdened. He’d come here to the cemetery, to Jess’s grave, wanted to be away from people, alone with his thoughts and memories of the man who’d saved him as a baby and helped shape who he’d become. He’d intended to sit here, just like he did on this day every year, drink a beer, smoke too many cigs, and just… sorta brood. That was the way October fifteenth always went.
Having Ryo show up out of the blue had definitely not been part of the plan, and yet instead of being an unwanted intrusion into something private, his partner’s arrival had made him feel warm inside. Ryo cared about him, enough to worry when he didn’t show up for work, enough to not only find out where he was but to come and check on him.
It was weirdly comforting, or maybe not so weird. Out of everyone he knew, Mother included, Ryo was the one person whose presence Dee realised would never be unwelcome. More than that, Dee had found himself wanting to share his memories with his partner. If anyone could understand, it would be Ryo, who’d lost both his parents when he was only a couple of years older than Dee had been when Jess was killed.
So he’d opened up, something he hadn’t thought he’d ever do, and told Ryo everything. How Jess had discovered him as a new-born baby, abandoned in an alleyway. How he’d stuck around after, visiting every day, becoming a permanent fixture in Dee’s life. He’d told Ryo about his friends, Tommy, Barry, and Arnon, about Arnon’s murder, and how Jess had died, and when he was done, he felt lighter.
And Ryo kissed him, the softest brush of lips against his cheek. Dee was right; he understood.
