“I’m so proud of you!” Mother had told Dee when he’d graduated the police academy as a rookie cop. She’d repeated that phrase with each advancement he’d made in his career, and he’d always known she meant it. She’d supported him wholeheartedly from the moment he’d told her what he wanted to do with his life.

Truth be told, he was pretty proud of himself. Up until he’d decided to follow in Jess’s footsteps, Dee hadn’t been particularly good at sticking with anything, but he’d thrown himself into the studies necessary for entering the academy, taking classes at night on top of his regular schoolwork, determined not to quit no matter how hard it got. It certainly hadn’t been easy, but he’d achieved all his ambitions, earning his place, graduating, going from rookie to fully fledged patrolman, and three years later to detective third grade. Since then, he’d been bumped up to second grade, and he was proud of that too; he had every reason to be. He’d gotten the promotion because he’d deserved it.

Despite his inauspicious start in life, dumped in a back alley when he was barely more than a few hours old, he’d done well in his life and career. He’d even earned several police medals for bravery, which looked suitably impressive when displayed on his dress blues, and yet what he was proudest of in his life was only loosely connected to his career.

He had tirelessly pursued and eventually won the heart of the most amazing, smart, funny, brave, and gorgeous guy he’d ever met. Nothing in his life gave him a greater feeling of pride than the privilege of sharing every moment possible with the man he loved more than anything.

“Ready for your first Pride Parade?” he asked Ryo, grinning. They’d been working at last year’s parade, helping to keep order, watching for crimes being committed, so their participation had been minimal. This year, they’d booked the day off in advance so they could really enjoy the celebration.

“I think so.” Ryo checked his refection in the mirror. “You don’t think a rainbow t-shirt is too much?”

“Babe, there’s gonna be guys in make-up and glitter, flyin’ their flags loud and proud. You could wear rainbows head to toe, and you’d still be down on the lower end of the flamboyancy spectrum. You look perfect.” Dee was wearing a Bi Pride t-shirt, and a rainbow bandanna with his black jeans.

“Well, if you’re sure.” Ryo slipped a denim shirt over the t-shirt, but before Dee could protest about him covering up, he turned to show the rainbow lettering on the back that read ‘Out & Proud’. “Aunt Elena sent it. What d’you think?”

“Frickin’ awesome! Don’t move.” Dee tugged out his phone to snap a quick picture. “’Kay then, let’s go do some flag flyin’ of our own!”

Dee was proud of everything he was, from being a cop to being bisexual, but most of all he was proud of his lover.
