Sitting on her bed, Buffy turns the claddagh ring over and over in her fingers. It’s such a tiny thing, but still so beautiful and so heart-breaking, evoking memories of the night Angel gave it to her, the night she’d given herself to him, and everything that has happened since, most of it bad.

Battling Angelus, seeing Angel’s soul returned too late and having to kill him anyway, running away from home and working as a waitress in L.A., coming home and trying to pick up the pieces of her old life…

And now, just as she was beginning to think she might be able to start moving forward, she feels like the rug’s been pulled out from under her again, all because of Scott and another claddagh ring that looked so much like the one in her hands that her slowly healing heart had all but shattered again.

She has to face facts; Angel is gone, that part of her life is over, and she needs to put it behind her, along with her feelings for him. She can’t go on living in the past. It isn’t healthy.

Taking the ring with her, Buffy slips out of her bedroom window, old habits being hard to break, and heads for the mansion.

Everything looks exactly the same as it did the day she killed Angel, except that Acathla in his tomb is gone. This was where she killed the man she loved with all her young heart, and she can’t think of a better place to say her final goodbye, but it’s so hard. For a long time Angel was everything that was good in her life. Part of her wants to hold on to him, but it’s time to let go.

Crouching down, tears in her eyes, she looks at the tiny silver ring one more time before setting it tenderly on the spot where Angel had died and been sucked into Hell.

“Goodbye.” She would have liked to say more, but she can’t seem to find the words. Straightening up, she turns and walks away without so much as a backward glance, leaving the ring on the cold, stained concrete floor, glinting softly in the moonlight.

The past is firmly behind her, and she’ll never forget any of it, but what matters now is her future. It won’t be easy, but perhaps she’s finally ready to move on.

The End
