“Making potions is a lot like chemistry,” Willow explained. “You have to add the right compounds in the right order, to get the desired result.”
“Mm,” Buffy muttered, pulling a face as she watched her friend. “I suck at chemistry anyway. I almost blew up the lab once, remember?”
“You just added a bit too much of the reagent; it could’ve happened to anyone.”
“While you know I appreciate you being all supportive best friend, let’s get real; I added ten times the amount of whatever that stuff was, because I misread what Mr Hammond wrote on the board.”
“Well, his handwriting was really bad…” Willow smiled at her friend. “Okay, you screwed up, but it was an impressive fireball. I think you can still see the mark through the new paint on the ceiling of the chemistry lab.”
“Really? Wow! I think I’m impressed with myself. At least no one got hurt.”
“Mistakes happen, with magic as well as with chemistry. I mean, I’m still just a beginner with spells and potions, I don’t always get stuff right first time. A few weeks ago, I pronounced a word wrong and the hazel twig I was using to stir the potion turned into a big worm, so I dropped it. I think it drowned.” Willow looked mournfully across at her friend.
“What happened to the potion?”
“It went pink and set like jello, so I threw it away. I didn’t dare use it.” Willow smiled sheepishly. “It was supposed to turn clear, like water. I had a zit, and it was a potion to get rid of blemishes. I thought it would be good practice for more important things.”
“Ugh!” Buffy shuddered. “Worm jello; I wouldn’t want to try that either. What’s this one for?”
Willow kept stirring the yellow liquid. “If it works, it should help you track the invisible demon. You soak one end of an ash wand in it, then use it sort of like a compass or dowsing rod. The end of the wand dipped into the potion will always point towards the demon. If we each have one, we should be able to use triangulation to determine the demon’s location.”
“Great! How soon will it be ready?”
“Maybe an hour? We need to allow time for the ash wands to absorb the potion. And it might not work.”
Buffy smiled. “It will. I trust you.”
