“What happened to you?” John Hart asked when he managed to get a few moments alone with Jack after having been relieved of all his many weapons. “You used to be fun, up for anything; now look at you!”
“What happened? I got smart, which is more than I can say for you. Booze, drugs, murder…” Jack shook his head. “What have you done with your life?”
“Had a blast, made more money than I could count, slept with practically every sentient species in the universe capable of copulation, and a good percentage of the non-sentient species too. Nobody’s lived more than I have.” Hart puffed up with pride.
“You’ve wasted your life. You made money and gambled it away. You went on binges that lasted months and couldn’t remember any of it after you went through detox. You’ve never had a real relationship with anyone, never loved anyone but yourself.”
“That’s a lie! I love you!”
“No you don’t. You love the man you wanted me to be, the one you tried to turn me into, but I’m not that man anymore. I grew up. There’s more to life than having a good time.”
“Not for me there isn’t.”
