“Dammit!” Dee muttered, wrestling with wrapping paper, and Scotch tape that stuck to everything except what he wanted it to stick to. Right now it was wrapped around his thumb and resisting all efforts to remove it. Why did he have to be so useless at this? Whatever Ryo wrapped always looked like it had been professionally done, but his own efforts fell far short of what he was aiming for.
He always forgot how much he hated this part of Christmas, right up until the time came to wrap gifts. Birthdays weren’t so bad; then he only had to wrap a few carefully chosen items for one person, and yeah, sometimes he’d pay the store a bit extra to have his purchases gift-wrapped. Christmas though, when there were presents to be wrapped for half a dozen people, always wound up being a bit of a nightmare.
Thank goodness for gift bags; they at least made it easier to wrap bottles of booze for his colleagues in a presentable fashion. Just slip a bottle in a bag, tuck colored tissue paper on top, write a label… Job done. But for Mother, Macey, and especially Ryo, more care and attention to detail was required.
Hah!
Dee finally wrenched the tape from around his thumb and cut off the tangled, ruined length. Wrapping gifts was not his strong point; maybe he should simply use gift bags for everything! Except he didn’t have any of a suitable size for most of what he’d bought, he didn’t want to brave the mall again, and he needed to at least deliver Macey and Mother’s gifts today. It was the only day off he was getting until after Christmas since he and Ryo were scheduled to work over the festive season this year.
Sighing, he resumed battle. Anything in nice, evenly shaped boxes wasn’t too difficult to wrap, although he could never get a straight edge when cutting wrapping paper from the roll. No matter how careful he was, it always wound up jagged and uneven. Still, it was the thought that counted, right? And the stick-on bows and rosettes at least looked pretty.
Come Christmas Day, having slept over at Ryo’s the night before so they could fit in some quality time over the festive period despite having to work, he handed Ryo the presents he’d had so much trouble wrapping.
“Happy Christmas, babe.” He smiled sheepishly. “Sorry they’re a bit of a mess. I don’t know how you always wrap things so neatly.”
Ryo laughed and kissed Dee. “It doesn’t matter, Dee, you did your best. Wrapping gifts is hard. My mom was really good at it, and she taught me a lot, but mine never come out quite as good.”
“You kiddin’? Everything you wrap looks amazin’!” Dee gestured to his own gifts.
“All that matters is that we’re together on Christmas,” Ryo reminded his lover.
“This Christmas, and every one that follows, babe. That’s a promise. Love you.”
“Love you too, Dee.”
