Christmas was only a few days away now, but that was fine. Despite long hours at work, Dee and Ryo had managed to get the decorations up in their apartment, gifts bought, and cards sent. The cupboards were stocked with festive foods, everything that could be prepared beforehand was done, and all they’d have to do on the day was cook their Christmas dinner and open presents.
This was to be their first Christmas since Ryo had moved in with Dee, and although Dee would have liked it to be just the two of them, he’d known all along that wouldn’t be possible. Bikky had arrived home from college a couple of days earlier, his hair bleached lighter than ever by the California sunshine, and had settled into his room at the far end of the apartment like he belonged there.
The boy was out at the moment, in fact they’d hardly seen him since they’d picked him up at the airport. Unsurprisingly, he was spending every moment he could with his girlfriend. Carol and her aunt would be coming over for Christmas dinner, because that was the only way to ensure that Bikky would be there. Ryo hadn’t wanted to make the kid choose between his dad and his girl, probably because he’d known Bikky would pick Carol. He was eighteen and head over heels in love.
Dee shrugged. Christmas was a time for family, so it was only natural for Ryo to want the boy he’d raised for eight years to celebrate with him, especially since there might not be many more of these New York family Christmases. Best to cherish them while they lasted; come next year, Carol would probably be in L.A. with Bikky, and they might not bother making the trip home. Well, maybe he and Ryo could fly down and spend the festive season with them in the sunshine… No, that wouldn’t work. They had Christmas and Boxing Day off this year, which meant they’d be working next year. Perhaps they could go for New Year instead.
“What’re you thinking about?”
Startled out of his reverie, Dee turned to his lover, smiling. “Just runnin’ through everything in my head, makin’ sure we didn’t forget anything.”
“I already did that; couldn’t think of anything. You?”
“Nope, I think we got it all sorted. Even got all the gifts wrapped; I usually end up doin’ that at the last minute on Christmas Eve.” Ryo was obviously a good influence.
“I think we did a good job of getting organised.” Ryo smiled in satisfaction, then sighed. “You know, Carol’s graduating next year. By Christmas she’ll be in L.A. with Bikky.”
“Yeah, I know. I was thinkin’ we could maybe join ‘em for New Year.”
That surprised Ryo. “Really?”
“Why not? Work over Christmas, get New Year off, barring the precinct bein’ short staffed. It would only be for a few days, but that’s still better than not seein’ them at all if they decide not to fly back, what with us bein’ at work and everything.”
“You really wouldn’t mind?”
“What, spendin’ New Year in the Californian sun? Why would I mind that?”
“Well, I know you were hoping it would be just the two of us this Christmas.”
“Hopin’ is the wrong word. Not sayin’ I wouldn’t have been happy with just you and me together, but that was never gonna happen. Bikky’s family, I knew you’d want him here for the holidays.”
“Not that we’ve seen much of him.” Ryo smiled wryly. “We’ve been off to work while he’s still in bed, and by the time we get home he’s off somewhere with Carol.”
“He’s still on L.A. time. Trust me, come Christmas mornin’ he’ll probably be the first one up, diggin’ through the presents under the tree.”
“Dee! He’s eighteen now, not a little kid!”
“Oh, like he’s suddenly become an adult in the last few months. Have you forgotten last Christmas, when he burst into your bedroom at five in the mornin’ and woke us up two hours before the alarm, demandin’ to know why there weren’t any presents for him?”
Ryo laughed. He’d hidden Bikky’s gifts so he wouldn’t open them before everyone was up the way he had the previous year. “Not the best idea I ever had.”
“Kids at Christmas. Bet you were the same,” Dee teased.
“I wasn’t. I had a stocking in my room, and I was allowed to open whatever was in that if I woke up early, but the presents under the tree had to wait until mom and dad got up. Dad told me if I opened them too soon, Santa would know and put me on the naughty list, and I wouldn’t get anything next Christmas. Worked like a charm; I didn’t dare risk it.”
“So how come you never tried that with Biks?”
“He already knew Santa wasn’t real.”
“Yeah, I can see how that might make the threat less effective. Maybe we could lock him in his room this year until we’re ready to get up, get a bit of peace that way.”
“No one’s locking anyone in anywhere,” Ryo said firmly. “Besides, we’ll have to get up anyway if we want dinner to be ready at a reasonable time. We can have a lie in on Boxing Day.”
“Okay, I guess I can live with that. How about now?”
“What d’you mean?”
“We’re all set for Christmas, we’ve got work tomorrow, so how about an early night? Bikky won’t be back ‘til late.”
Ryo smiled, leaning in for a kiss. “An early night sounds perfect.”
