Long, slow breakers swept up the beach, coming a little closer each time. The tide was coming in, but neither Dee nor Ryo wanted to move. For the moment they were far enough away from the tideline to avoid getting wet, but that wouldn’t last much longer.
They were sitting on the sand, staring out across the restless ocean, shoulder-to-shoulder, but lost in their own thoughts. Some days, speech just seemed superfluous, and anyway, some things defied being put into words. Life moved on and no one could turn back the hands of time, no matter how much they might want to.
It was strange. In their job, people drifted in and out of their lives all the time. Victims, witnesses, criminals, fellow cops… Informants like Jerry. He’d been in the Navy when he was younger, thought about re-enlisting when his time was up, but didn’t. Worked the docks until he was injured in an accident, then eked out a living doing odd jobs here and there. Became a police informant by chance. He’d liked that, doing his civic duty, but it had been the death of him.
They’d scattered his ashes on the ocean, hoping he’d rest in peace.
