Fluffs were such a mass of contradictions. They were gentle and affectionate, yet fiercely protective, rather like dogs. They had no hands with which to manipulate the world around them, yet they were intelligent enough that they could be taught to read and spell, even write if provided with suitable technology.

They were responsible enough to be trusted with the care of young children, and were tireless playmates, but they were tidy minded, always putting the toys away when playtime was over.

No one knew exactly how old Nosy was, although obviously it was mature enough to have young of its own or it wouldn’t have produced Dizzy, yet it couldn’t sleep without its teddy bear.

Jack had often warned the team not to expect aliens to think the way humans did, because aliens weren’t humans. Fluffs were a case in point. Nosy would willingly help clean the Hub, ran errands for its friends, and had recently passed open university courses in English and Welsh designed for adults. It was so smart, and yet…

Drawing back his arm, Ianto threw the stick and Nosy chased after it down the beach. For all its intelligence, it never tired of playing fetch.
