Witness protection wasn’t either detective’s favourite gig, but it was a vitally important one. As such, Dee and Ryo took it seriously; if the star witness didn’t survive long enough to testify then a major case would almost certainly be lost, and two men with connections to organised crime would quite literally be getting away with murder.

So here they were in a crummy hotel room, two detectives and their witness, Madison Granger, a woman who’d been on her way home from her job as a bartender when she’d seen a murder taking place. Two men she’d later identified as a less than reputable businessman and his executive assistant had been savagely beating a young woman who’d discovered details of their dirty dealings. Once they’d made certain she hadn’t told anyone what she knew, they’d stabbed her and left her bleeding out in an alley.

Madison had stayed hidden until the men left, then had gone to the young woman’s aid, calling the police and an ambulance. The woman had died before the ambulance arrived, but not before telling Madison where to find the evidence she’d hidden. Now Ms Granger was ready to tell all at the trial set to begin the following morning.

Babysitting witnesses was a boring job. It was late, getting on for midnight. They’d had fast food delivered for a late dinner, and the small TV was on with the sound down low so that their charge could watch an old movie. Ryo was at the window, peeking out between the slats of the blinds, keeping an eye on the street.

Dee was at the table, supposedly playing solitaire, although his eyes kept wandering towards his partner. He was startled out of his reverie when Madison came to sit beside him, cradling a cup of tea in both hands.

“You love him, don’t you?” She kept her voice low.

“What? Who?” Dee didn’t blush easily, but he felt his face grow warm. So much for being discreet.

“Your partner.”

Dee snorted. “What makes ya think that?”

“I tend bar, I study people, and I notice stuff. You’re always watching him, like you’re drinking in the sight of him. Does he know how you feel? Oh, don’t worry, I won’t say anything, not to your partner or anyone else. I wouldn’t want to get you into trouble, you’ve both been so kind. I guess I’m just an incurable romantic.”

“I know,” Ryo said from the window. He glanced over his shoulder. “Weird acoustics in here, I heard everything you said.”

“Oh!” Now it was Madison’s turn to blush. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to be nosy or anything. My curiosity’s gonna be the death of me someday.”

“It’s okay. I know how Dee feels, because I feel the same way. We just do our best to keep our relationship under the radar.” Ryo turned back to his vigil. A year ago, he would have freaked out at someone guessing their secret, but now, he just considered himself lucky.

The End
