Ianto knew the importance of having good neighbours, and the even greater importance of remaining on good terms with them. Growing up, his tad had got into a feud with the man next door and Ianto had taken to running past the neighbour’s house as fast as he could, not wanting to get yelled at for something that wasn’t even his fault. It was why he always tried to be a good neighbour himself.

“Here you are, dear,” his neighbour Phyllis said one day, handing him a bundle of something orange and green. “It’s getting colder, and you need to keep warm. You’re always going out so early and staying out late.”

Ianto shook out the massively long hand-knitted scarf. “Thank you, Phyllis, it looks lovely and cosy.”

“Why do you always thank her for her knitted monstrosities?” Jack asked. “They’re hideous!”

“She means well, and I wouldn’t want to offend her by refusing a gift. She enjoys knitting. It’s not her fault she’s colourblind.”

“But you’re always helping her with stuff, and all you get in return are eyesores.”

“Not so. Who do you think makes the jam you’re always raving about?”

Jack paused. “Oh. Well that changes everything.”
