“You know,” Ryo said, trying to shave while Dee was brushing his teeth, the pair of them jostling each other for space at the bathroom sink, “Getting ready for work in the morning was so much simpler when I lived alone. I never needed to rush, just got up when the alarm went off, showered, shaved, dressed, had a quick breakfast…” He sighed. “I could be up and out of the apartment in forty-five minutes most days. No fighting over the shower, no having someone else use up all the hot water, no having to clean up in the bathroom, pick up the towels, and mop up puddles of water.”
These days, most mornings he felt frazzled before he even left home. Bikky was like a small whirlwind, scattering everything in his wake as he got ready for school. Bedcovers and clothes all over the floor, soap left in the bathtub, the caps open on bottles of shampoo and conditioner, towels left wherever they fell, crumbs scattered across the kitchen table, mingling with spilled juice or milk…
There was always a stack of breakfast dishes, which had to be washed and put away before Ryo could begin his commute, and he seemed to spend half his time picking up after his foster son. When Dee was added into the mix, three people vying for the shower, and even more dishes to be washed, Ryo’s previously leisurely morning routine became complete chaos, although at least Dee tidied up after himself and helped with the dishes. Sometimes he even cooked breakfast; at the very least he made the coffee.
Now Dee grinned, white teeth flashing as he rinsed his toothbrush and put it in the rack.
“If ya think this is hectic, you should try mornings at the orphanage. More than twenty kids tryin’ to get washed and dressed, only eight showers between ‘em, one kid can’t find their coat, two more can’t find their shoes, another hasn’t finished their homework, someone else has lost their glasses. Some of the girls need their hair braided, everyone has to be chased to brush their teeth, breakfast is a complete madhouse, Mother jugglin’ makin’ toast, scramblin’ eggs, breakin’ up fights over who gets the last of the cereal. Compared to that, this is relaxin’.”
Dee started shaving while Ryo took his turn brushing his teeth. “That sounds completely insane.”
“It was, but somehow Mother always managed to get everyone organised and off to school on time, properly dressed and mostly clean. You know what kids are like; someone would always manage to get somethin’ sticky in their hair, or decide to go play in a mud puddle.”
Ryo laughed. “How often was that someone you?”
“A few times.” Dee splashed on aftershave and ran a comb through his hair. “Be honest, would ya really wanna go back to the quiet life, only yourself to get off to work every mornin’?”
Considering the chaos surrounding him, Ryo shook his head. Mornings were hectic, but happy.
The End
