Dee had always been big on loyalty, and that was largely down to Mother’s influence. She’d staunchly supported all her kids, punishing them when necessary but making sure they knew she’d always be there for them. Between that and Jess visiting the orphanage practically every day of Dee’s life, he’d learned early that you stuck with the people who mattered to you, come what may.

He’d remained loyal to his childhood friends, although he still felt guilty that he hadn’t been there when Arnon had needed him most, and he’d been mostly faithful to his various girlfriends and boyfriends. At least he had once he’d gotten past his love ‘em and leave ‘em teenage years, when he’d been more interested in spreading his love around than in sticking with any one person.

Joining the police force had given him a whole new set of loyalties, to his brothers and sisters in blue, to his superiors, to the force itself, and to the people of New York. He’d made a vow when he graduated to protect and to serve, and nothing was going to make him dishonour the badge. As much as he’d loved and respected Jess for his many good qualities, he wasn’t about to follow his mentor into corruption. Jess had told him to live his life honestly, and he intended to live up to the promise he’d made.

Now he had an even greater loyalty that went above everything else, to his partner, the man he loved with all his heart. Even before their relationship had deepened from the close friendship they’d developed to something far more intimate, Dee had been ready and willing to sacrifice his own career by killing the man who’d murdered Ryo’s parents to prevent Ryo from throwing his own career away. He didn’t feel that impulse was a betrayal of his duty as a police officer, since Leo Grant was a mobster and admitted murderer, but he was just as relieved that in the end he hadn’t needed to kill an unarmed man.

There was, Dee knew, nothing he wouldn’t do for Ryo, whether his lover asked him to or not, and he absolutely would not cheat on him, regardless of the temptation he was being subjected to. He knew he could count on Ryo not to cheat either, even though he was never going to trust Berkeley Rose around his baby. The Commissioner was the kind of wealthy, powerful man who thought he could have whatever he wanted, and Ryo was just oblivious enough to not always notice he was being taken advantage of.

The woman Dee was currently protecting was beautiful, wealthy, and definitely interested in him, judging by the way she never missed a chance to touch him or rub against him, but he maintained professional detachment.

“Don’t you think I’m beautiful?” she asked with a pout.

“Sure, for a woman, but my boyfriend is way hotter.”

When he told Ryo later, he hoped his lover would appreciate his fidelity.
