“What have we got this time?” Jack asked, coming out of his office in response to the Rift alarm going off. “Animal, vegetable, or mineral, or is it a nice, inoffensive bit of junk?”
Tosh was busy calling up windows on her computer, checking the readings her Rift monitor technology had collected at the moment whatever it was had been spat out somewhere on the streets of Cardiff.
“According to this…” She checked a couple of other details. “Vegetable, some kind of plant life. Carbon-based, alive, and approximately two feet tall, but I can’t tell you much more than that. There aren’t any CCTV cameras in the vicinity. It’s in Splott.”
While the city centre had cameras everywhere as a deterrent to crime, suburban areas weren’t so well covered, mostly just occasional home security systems, which Tosh could usually hack into.
“Not to worry, that should be enough. Owen, you’re our plant expert, so you’re with me.”
“Great, another specimen for the hot house!”
Owen’s enthusiasm was short-lived when he and Jack found the new arrival snacking on an unfortunate pigeon.
“Bloody hell, Tosh didn’t say anything about it bein’ carnivorous!”
Jack shrugged. “It’s alien. Let’s just hope it’s friendly.”
