Being a doctor had never been enough for Owen. He’d had higher ambitions. He wanted to heal, to save lives, but the part he didn’t enjoy was having to treat patients.

People were annoying. They fidgeted, dithered, complained, and didn’t give him the information he needed to make a diagnosis. Worse, a lot of them outright lied, and how was anyone ever supposed to figure out what their problem was if they left stuff out?

Being a surgeon had seemed the best option. That way, by the time a patient was passed to him he already knew what was wrong with them and could just schedule them for surgery. They’d be blessedly unconscious while he fixed them up, completely still and silent, just the way he liked them.

Only now, here he was working for Torchwood, where he was either cutting up dead things or dealing with living patients, some of them not even human! He knew which part of the job he preferred.

“Will you stay still so I can stitch you up?” he snapped.

“You could at least let the local anaesthetic kick in first,” Ianto snarked back.

Owen couldn’t wait to get to his next autopsy subject!
