In Dee’s opinion, seven days and seven nights wasn’t anywhere near enough, but it was all the time they were getting, and they were lucky they’d been granted that much. This was a busy time of year for the NYPD, and both of them taking off at the same time would put more pressure on the remaining members of the SCU, but they’d saved some of their vacation time just so they could get away from the bleak New York winter for a bit, and if they didn’t use it soon, they’d lose it.

They’d hoped they could take two weeks at once and have a decent break, but the old badger had vetoed that right away, saying he couldn’t spare them for that long. He and Ryo would have to take their second week as a day or two here and there, maybe add an extra day to their scheduled days off until they were all used up, but for now they were heading south for a week in the Bahamas. Sun, sand, and sea, sipping cold drinks while lounging beneath a palm tree; that was Dee’s idea of heaven.

Only downside was, they’d be spending a fair amount of the first and last days of their vacation travelling, leaving them only five days to fully enjoy life on a beach. It wouldn’t be as much of a relaxing break as they’d been hoping for, but Dee supposed he shouldn’t complain. Even a few days in the sun beat having to endure the snow, ice, and bitterly cold wind that currently had New York in its grip.

Scooping up his suitcase, Dee locked up the apartment and headed downstairs to where Ryo was already waiting in the taxi. They just needed to be on the plane before the Chief could call and tell them their leave had been cancelled, because then their phones would be off, and he wouldn’t be able to reach them.

Tossing his bags in the trunk of the cab, Dee scrambled intro the backseat with Ryo. “Tropical getaway, here we come! I can almost feel the sunshine already.”

Beside him, Ryo shivered. “Wish I could!” Dressing for the current conditions hadn’t seemed practical; they wouldn’t need thick coats, gloves, hats, and scarves where they were going and such things would only take up a big chunk of their baggage allowance, so they were both dressed in clothing more suited to their destination.

Dee snuggled close to his lover, draping an arm around him. “Guess we’ll just have to keep each other warm until we get there.”

“You’ll use any excuse, won’t you?”

“Sharin’ body heat’s a traditional way of beatin’ the cold. Would ya rather sit there freezin’ your ass off?”

“We’ll be fine once the taxi warms up,” Ryo pointed out as the driver pulled away from the curb. The heater was going, and warm air was already starting to reach them in the backseat.

“We’re on vacation, and we only have a week; we should make the most of every second.”

“Well, when you put it that way…”

“I’ll put it any way ya want it, babe.”

Ryo rolled his eyes. “Hornball! I can’t believe you said that!”

Dee just laughed and pulled him closer.

Traffic was bad because of the weather conditions. Snowplows were doing their best to keep the roads clear, but the journey to the airport still took a lot longer than it would have under normal circumstances. They’d anticipated that possibility, however, and left home a couple of hours early so they wouldn’t miss their flight. Turned out the needn’t have bothered; when they arrived, they found their flight was delayed because of the snow.

“Ya gotta be kiddin’ me!” Dee complained as he studied the departure board. “Seven hours? We’ve only got seven days; at this rate we’re gonna lose the whole of our first day in flight time and delays. I was hopin’ we’d get to spend some of it on the beach!”

“You’re such a drama queen! The flight takes less than three hours; even with the delays we should be there early tomorrow morning. Wasn’t that why we decided to take a late flight?”

Dee deflated. “I guess, but now instead of arrivin’ around midnight and crashin’ at the hotel for a few hours, we won’t be leavin’ here until at least three-thirty. It’ll be gettin’ on for seven before we get to our hotel.”

“We should be just in time for breakfast!”

“And when are we gonna sleep?”

“Seven-hour delay, Dee. Airport seating might not be the most comfortable but we’ve both slept in far worse places. We’ll manage.”

“Stupid snowstorm!” Dee grumbled, dragging his suitcase towards some unoccupied seats. “Stupid delays!”

“It won’t be much of a vacation if all you’re going to do is complain about every little thing.”

“A seven-hour delay is hardly little. Anyway, I’ll stop complainin’ once I’m on the beach with a cold drink in my hand,” Dee promised. “Until them, I think I’m entitled.”

Stretching out on an airport bench seat, using his carry-on luggage as a makeshift pillow, Ryo closed his eyes. “Fine, complain all you want, just do it quietly. I plan to get some sleep while I can; it’ll make the time pass faster.”

Dee slumped onto a nearby seat, scowling at his lover; why did Ryo always have to take everything so well? Anyone would think he didn’t mind the delays ruining the start of their vacation. Grumbling under his breath he lay down and tried to get comfortable. This was going to be a long seven hours; he could only hope the seven days ahead of them would pass equally slowly and not fly past in the blink of an eye, the way vacations so often did. He wanted to get the most he could out of every single moment, so he’d have the memories to sustain him throughout the rest of the long, cold, depressing New York winter, when their week in paradise would no doubt seem like nothing more than a distant dream. They just had to get there first.

The End
