All things considered Dee felt he’d behaved with remarkable restraint. Yeah, he’d roughed the guy up a bit, but the bastard was still in one piece. Mostly. Ryo should be proud of him.

Well, maybe not, judging by the horrified expression on his partner’s face.

“What did you do? Is he even still alive?”

Gee, thanks! Way to be supportive, pard.

“’Course he is. And it was totally self-defence.”

Okay, they both knew that was stretching the truth to breaking point and beyond. Sure, the dumb fucker had swung at him a time or two, blows which Dee, with his police training and better reflexes, not to mention righteous anger, had easily blocked, but Dee couldn’t leave a monster like that with any opportunity to try again, right? This guy was responsible for abducting and murdering several defenceless teenage girls, and God alone knew what he’d done to them while they’d been his captives. The sonofabitch had even taken souvenirs, cutting the right hand off each of his victims, although thankfully, according to the coroner, that had been done after they were already dead. If anyone thought Dee had been too rough while arresting this psycho, they should remember it was nothing in comparison to the crimes he’d committed.

Dee gazed dispassionately at the wreck of a man lying on the floor. “We should restrain him, just in case he tries to escape. You got your cuffs with ya?” His own were still at Ryo’s place, forgotten in the rush.

“Of course, but… Dee, he’s unconscious, maybe even has a few broken bones; cuffing him would be overkill, don’t you think? He’s not going anywhere.”

“I wouldn’t be too sure about that; he could be bluffing, waitin’ for us to let our guard down.”

Ryo gave Dee a look. “As it is he’ll need medical treatment before we can charge him. Did you even bother to read him his rights before beating him to a pulp?”

“Before? No. During… Hey, he already knew I was a cop from the last time we met.”

“Dee…” Ryo sounded as pained as he looked.

“Yeah, I read him his rights. I know the routine. Not entirely sure he was conscious at the time, but… Dammit, Ryo, you know what this psycho did! What he was gonna do to our princess, given half a chance! You can’t be takin’ his side!”

“I’m not, I’m taking the law’s side; what you’ve done to him could be seen as police brutality. The last thing we need is for him to get off on a technicality, like you using unnecessary force while arresting him.”

“Oh, believe me, the force I used was entirely necessary.”

“Maybe it made you feel better, but it’s giving me a headache, especially if you expect me to write this up. Which, by the way, I’m not doing, not this time. You can do your own paperwork. I don’t even want to try explaining this.” Ryo stared down at the murderer, then at Dee. “You couldn’t exercise some restraint?”

Dee huffed, indignant. “I thought I had. He’s still alive, isn’t he? I would’a liked to kill him, but I didn’t. Don’t I deserve points for that?”

“Not with the Chief.”

“The old badger’s not here; you are. Can ya honestly tell me you wouldn’t have done the same thing if you’d been the one arrestin’ him?”

Ryo chewed his bottom lip; it was a good question, one he didn’t have a definite answer for, but in Dee’s place he might well have reacted in a similar way.

On the floor, the murderer stirred, groaned, moved…

From the corner of his eye, Ryo saw the flash of light on a knife blade and lashed out with his foot, catching the man on the wrist. There was an audible snap, the killer screamed, and the switchblade he’d pulled from who knew where went skittering away across the floorboards.

“Now that was self-defence; he had a knife and was planning to use it.”

“Yeah.” Dee nodded. “No argument from me. Think ya broke his wrist though, guess that means we can’t cuff him.”

“Mm, you’re right. Listen, I need to take Carol to the hospital, get her checked over. Maybe you should follow in the ambulance, make sure this guy doesn’t try to escape Oh, and frisk him too, just in case he’s got any other little surprises tucked away.”

“Good thinkin’. But can I have your cuffs anyway? Then I can cuff his good wrist to the gurney. Be a whole lot harder for him to make a break for it draggin’ that behind him.”

“I guess that makes sense. Okay, here.” Ryo handed over his cuffs. “D’you want the keys as well?”

“Nah, not gonna need ‘em until we’re at the hospital, and you’ll probably get there before I do. Did anyone call for an ambulance yet?”

“I’ll check with JJ; I think he was calling for backup and a crime scene team, maybe he requested the paramedics at the same time.”

“Okay, you do that; I’ll wait here, make sure this guy doesn’t decide to wander off.”

“Fine, just don’t kill him; we don’t want him getting off that lightly.”

“I guess not, temptin’ as it might be.”

As Ryo headed back down the stairs, Dee crouched beside the murderer.

“Try to escape, why don’t ya? That would be all the excuse I need to throw your sorry ass over the railin’ there. It’s three floors straight down to the foyer; if ya get real lucky, ya might not break ya neck. Ya might break a few other bones though, can’t see ya gettin’ very far either way.”

The big, bad murderer of innocent little girls suddenly didn’t look so big or bad. Dee smiled viciously; now maybe the psycho bastard knew how it felt to be a victim. Hopefully this was a lesson he wouldn’t soon forget.

The End
