“Man, what a day!” Dee collapsed bonelessly onto Ryo’s sofa, long legs and bare feet stretched out in front of him, flexing his aching ankles and toes, relieved to finally be off his feet.

“Tell me about it. Here, I think we’ve earned this.”

Ryo sank down beside Dee, passing him an open bottle of beer, the outside already dewed with moisture from the heat of the room reacting with the chill of the glass. He took a sip from his own bottle before flopping back against the cushions with a groan.

Dee took a long drink, downing half his beer in a few gulps. “Ah, that hits the spot.”

“Mm.” Ryo closed his eyes. “I’m beat. If we’d had to walk any further I think my feet might’ve fallen off.”

Beside him, Dee snickered faintly and took another swig of beer. “I don’t think that’s physically possible, but I know whatcha mean. I swear my feet didn’t hurt this much when we were hikin’ in New England last fall.”

“It was cooler then, and we were wearing good hiking boots, not our regular shoes. Pounding the sidewalks for three hours in this heat…” Ryo trailed off, resting his cold beer bottle against his forehead for a moment, hoping it would soothe his headache.

Maybe a bottle of water would have been better for him than beer, but sometimes he felt the need for a bit of self-indulgence, and today was definitely one of those days. The journey home on the subway, which had been standing room only, followed by a walk of several blocks, all on top of spending most of the afternoon canvassing for witness to a shooting, had left him with an intense desire for a cold one. Besides, he and Dee had been drinking water all afternoon, so they weren’t dehydrated.

“Sidewalks are hard on the feet,” Dee agreed, draining the last of his beer and setting the empty bottle on the end table.

Ryo held his bottle up to the light; there was about a quarter left, and another swallow halved that. “Suppose I should get dinner started in a minute.”

“What’s the rush? Ya can’t want to do a load of cookin’ in this heat; it’ll just make the apartment hotter. We can maybe rustle up a salad later, somethin’ that doesn’t take too much effort. Either that or order in.”

It was a tempting idea. “What about Bikky?”

“He won’t care long as there’s food of some description. Relax, a nap will do ya more good than slavin’ over a hot stove. Might even help your headache.”

“How’d you know I’ve got a headache?”

“After bein’ out in weather like this? I’d be surprised if ya didn’t.”

Ryo sighed. “A nap does sound good… Maybe just for a few minutes.”

When Bikky arrived home an hour later, starving hungry, he found both men sound asleep on the sofa, and no sign of dinner.

Good thing he knew the number for the pizza place.
