“She lived to a good age,” Dee said firmly. “Ninety-three! We should all be so lucky, and she was in pretty good health right up to the end.”

“Yes, she was.” Ryo smiled gently; the last time he and Dee had visited Mother she’d been as bright-eyed and clear-headed as ever, not to mention still quite spry and energetic, though her small frame had been slightly stooped from age and arthritis.

“She’s left behind the kind of legacy she can be proud of, one that’ll last. The orphanage is still going strong, and it’ll continue even now she’s gone. That’s what she would’ve wanted.”

Dee was trying to put up a brave front, but Ryo could still see the sorrow shadowing his husband’s usually vivid green eyes.

“That doesn’t mean you can’t feel sad, Dee. She was your mother and I know you’ll miss her. So will I, and all the children in her care. She was a very special woman.”

Dee had gotten the call about Mother’s death only a short while ago. They’d been planning to visit her at the weekend, but now they had a funeral to help arrange instead.

“I should’ve made time to visit last week.” Dee slumped onto the sofa, head bowed, and forearms resting on his knees, his hands hanging limp. “I should’ve been there when she…” He trailed off, unable to say the word.

“You didn’t know, nobody did. She just went to bed last night and didn’t wake up this morning.” Ryo sat beside the man he loved, taking one of Dee’s hands in his. “No suffering, no pain, no fuss. She’s in heaven now, and you know she’ll be watching over you like a hawk.”

A faint chuckle escaped Dee’s lips. “She always said she had to keep a close eye on me all the time when I was growing up, and I still got myself in more trouble than any of her other kids.”

“And look how you turned out. She was always so proud of you.”

“Yeah.” Dee wiped his eyes with the back of his free hand. “She was the best mother I could’ve had. I didn’t tell her that nearly enough.”

“She knew.” Leaning in, Ryo pressed a kiss to his husband’s cheek. “Actions speak louder than words, and you showed her how much you loved her all the time.”

“I tried. I just… I wish I could’ve told her, just one last time, and said goodbye.”

“There’ll be time for that at the funeral. Right now, we should get ready and go over to the orphanage, there’s a lot needing to be done.”

“We’ve got work…”

“I called the Academy; told them we’re taking compassionate leave. Funerals take a lot of planning and this one needs to be perfect. It should be a celebration of Mother’s life.”

“You’re right; thanks, babe.” Wrapping one arm around Ryo he hugged his husband close. Heart heavy with sorrow still he managed a sad smile. “Mother deserves the best.”
