Dee was supposed to be home sick, at least that was what he’d told the Chief when he’d phoned the precinct earlier. Ryo wasn’t convinced, mostly because his partner had seemed perfectly fine yesterday. Okay, some viruses and stuff came on fast and knocked the stuffing out of you, but Dee hardly ever got sick. Still, it seemed worth checking up on him, just to be sure.

Finding Dee’s apartment practically turned upside down was the first indication that Dee had outright lied to their boss in order to take time off without using up his vacation time, or his allotted personal days, and because he was so brazen about it he’d no doubt get away with it. The mess, however, was unexpected. Ryo had thought he’d probably find his lover watching sport on TV, if he was even home.

Instead, Dee was in the back room, which was almost empty of furniture, with a gaping hole knocked in one wall, busily extending his apartment into the one next door. The whole of the top floor was now his to use however he wanted, although what he’d do with so much space, Ryo couldn’t begin to imagine. Bad enough that Ryo would be rattling around his own two-bedroom apartment now that Bikky would soon be heading off to college in L.A., but Dee’s place was going to be almost twice as big, way more space than one man needed.

He'd said as much to Dee, who’d hesitated before asking, “Why don’t you move in?”

Perhaps Ryo should have expected Dee’s question, but it took him completely by surprise, leaving him floundering for several moments. He and Dee worked together practically every day, and in the years since they’d become lovers, they’d grown accustomed to spending at least a couple of nights a week together, sometimes at Ryo’s apartment and sometimes Dee’s, but for some reason the thought of moving in together had never crossed Ryo’s mind. Maybe he really was that much of an oblivious airhead.

‘What should I tell him?’ Ryo thought. ‘There’s nothing wrong with being independent, living my own life, and having my own place, but I’ve gotten used to having company at home. Whenever Bikky’s away at camp the apartment always feels so empty, and now he’ll be gone for months at a time. It’s going to be lonely without him.’

How much time would he spend at his apartment alone? Wasn’t it likely he’d seek out Dee’s company, invite his lover to spend the night more often, or sleep over at Dee’s place? The freedom of living alone had been great when he was younger but over the past few years it had lost its appeal. He liked having someone to cook for, and to care for, someone to talk to and share the chores with

Dee rambled on, trying to convince him that living together was the way to go. Ryo smiled; there was only one answer he could give.

“How about next month?”
