Encountering a race of telepathic aliens was a bit jarring, even after meeting so many different kinds of people in his travels with Jack aboard the Happy Wanderer. In a way they seemed even more alien to Ianto than the feathered, scaled, or tentacled beings he’d learned to accept as perfectly ordinary people.

Perhaps it was partly the fact that they looked so much like regular humans. Yes, their skin had a bluish tinge, and their hair came in various shades of grey, but they had the usual two arms, two legs, and a head, attached to their bodies in the same positions, and substantially the same ways, as humans. Even their facial features were more humanoid than most; two eyes, a nose in the middle, with a mouth below it. They even had teeth, lips, and tongue, although they lacked eyebrows.

Talking to them, however, was like talking to a bunch of ventriloquists. He could hear them perfectly well, speaking Galactic Standard, and yet their lips never moved. Their voices were entirely in his head.

“Telepathic aliens are going to take a bit of getting used to,” he told Jack.

“If it’s any consolation, they can’t read your mind.”
