Bad enough that Xander persuaded Amy to work a love spell in the first place; those aren’t magics to be mucked about with. It’s hardly surprising, to Giles at least, that it backfired so spectacularly. Xander does seem to be a magnet for that kind of luck.
Giles would like to say it’s Xander’s own fault, let that be a lesson not to meddle with things he doesn’t understand, but the situation is rather… dire. With every woman in Sunnydale suddenly obsessed with him, Xander is in genuine peril. So are Sunnydale’s women; there’s a very real possibility that they might fight each other to the death over him.
And now Buffy is a rat, because Amy has fallen victim to her own spell and couldn’t stand the competition Buffy represented.
A rat, in his library! Giles hopes she doesn’t start chewing his books; his collection is rather valuable, and many of the volumes are extremely rare, irreplaceable. Buffy needs to be captured before she causes any damage. And because Amy won’t be able to change her back if she gets away.
Good Buffy, nice rat, where did you go?
“Ooo, there!” Xander points. Perhaps he isn’t entirely useless.
Unfortunately, an irate Oz gets in the way of their roundup, and the Buffy rat slips through the library door before it can close. Giles is about ready to tear his hair out in despair. There are two spells needing to be reversed, the witch responsible is too distracted by Xander’s presence to be of any help, and there’s a rat on the loose who used to be a human. Which problem to address first?
Divide and conquer.
First send the distraction, otherwise known as Xander Harris, home, then attempt, with Amy and Jenny’s assistance, to break the love spell. That leaves Oz to locate Buffy, a werewolf on the trail of a Slayer in rat form. Wonderful. Giles is sure other Watchers never have to cope with problems like this. If Buffy can’t be restored to her normal self, what then?
On the plus side, there’s another Slayer, thanks to Buffy’s brief death. Kendra can take over Slayer duties. On the downside, Giles has no desire to own a pet rat, and anyway, what would he tell Buffy’s mother?
Thankfully, he doesn’t need to say anything; both spells are undone, and Buffy is herself again.
That was a narrow squeak.
