New York appeared to have skipped spring altogether this year, the weather going from cold, damp, and frosty to summer temperatures practically overnight. After an unusually long, wet winter, the bright sunshine and clear skies might have been welcome, except that maintenance was way behind in their duties, meaning that heat in the twenty-seventh precinct’s station house was still on, and the air conditioning was off.

Ryo felt like he was sitting fully dressed in a sauna, even though he was wearing as little as he could get away with, just a loose cotton shirt with the top two buttons unfastened and a pair of lightweight chinos usually reserved for late summer rather than April. He was better off than those of his colleagues wearing suits, but not by much.

“This is insane!” Dee complained from where he sat slumped at his desk, fanning himself with a file folder and trying in vain to unstick his shirt from his body with his other hand. “We’re all gonna wind up with heatstroke!”

“Tell me something I don’t know.” Ryo wiped the sweat from his face with his handkerchief; it had been crisp and clean that morning, but now was as limp and sodden as he felt. He wished he had less hair, sure that it was insulating the top of his head so well that his brains were slowly cooking. That would explain why thinking was so difficult; he was trying to type up a report, but to do that he needed words, and right now he seemed to have forgotten them all. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, unpleasantly aware of how sticky he was. He was dragged from his thoughts by Dee’s voice.

“Um, Vatican City is officially the world’s smallest country?”

Ryo blinked at his partner, confused. Was the heat addling Dee’s brain as well?

“What’re you talking about?”

“You said to tell you something you didn’t know.”

“I was being sarcastic. I think.” Ryo paused. “Are you sure about that? Vatican City?”

“Yep. Mother told me, and she should know.”

“Huh. You’re right, I didn’t know that. I always thought it was Monaco.”

Dee tried for a smug smirk, but it came off as more of a grimace. “I do know things.”

“Never said you didn’t. You’re right about something else too; this is insane. No one should be expected to work in these conditions. My brain is fried, and I can’t remember how to spell.” Ryo picked up his bottle of water and downed the last couple of inches in it in two gulps. It was warm and he pulled a face; he’d only gotten it from the refrigerator ten minutes ago.

“C’mon.” Dee stood up, wincing as he unstuck his pants from his ass and went to grab two fresh bottles of water from the refrigerator, putting a couple more in there to cool.

“Where’re we going?”

“Firing range. It’s underground, gotta be cooler down there.”

Ryo thought about lying on cold tiles.

“Sounds good.”
