Coming into the squad room at the start of his shift, JJ couldn’t help noticing the way Dee was watching his partner, his eyes following Ryo’s every move; he was practically drooling! It was so unfair; Dee had never looked at JJ that way. Shoulders sagging, he turned away, crossed to his own desk, and sank dejectedly into his chair.

“You okay there, li’l buddy?” Drake leaned forward across his desk. “Not like you to be so down.”

Bless Drake for being such a good friend. JJ dredged up a weak smile. “I’m fine, it’s just…” He huffed a sigh. “What does Dee even see in Ryo? I mean, they’re nothing alike! Dee’s all passion and fire and gorgeousness, and Ryo’s just… Well, you know, sort of ordinary. Dee could have anyone, he could have me, but no, he carries right on wasting his time, lusting after someone who isn’t even interested. Why? I just don’t get it.”

“Well, you know what they say; opposites attract.”

“That’s just silly. Shouldn’t we be attracted to the people we have something in common with? Similar interests, similar outlooks in life, stuff like that?”

“That’s not the way attraction works. I dated this girl once, Tina, we liked all the same things, but no one’s ever annoyed me more. Guess we were too much alike. Besides, what about you?”

“What d’you mean?”

“You’re attracted to Dee, but you and he are nothing alike. You’re short, he’s tall, you’re usually cheerful, he’s moody, you’re full of energy, he’s lazy, you’re fair skinned, he’s gotta have some Latin blood, maybe Mexican or Puerto Rican, you’re a romantic, he’s… Dee. The two of you are total opposites.”

“So then why isn’t he attracted to me? If opposites attract then I’m perfect for him, just the way he’s perfect for me!”

“On paper maybe, but not in the real world. Face it, JJ, for whatever reason you’re just not his type.”

“But I love him! I’d be anything he wanted me to be.”

“Could you be Ryo? Because it’s Ryo he wants, and I can’t see him giving up the chase anytime soon.”

JJ gazed bleakly at Drake, his blue eyes full of hurt. “I could make him so happy if he’d just give me a chance.”

“Maybe that’s not the kind of happiness he’s looking for. Give it up, JJ; there are plenty more fish in the sea.”

“But I only want Dee!”

“I know, and he only wants Ryo.”

“And what does Ryo want?”

“I don’t think even he could answer that. I know he’s told Dee he’s completely straight, but I’ve never seen him show any interest in women, not even when they’ve practically been throwing themselves at him. It’s like he doesn’t notice. Their flirting goes right over his head.”

“I wish he’d never come here. Then I could’ve had Dee all to myself.”

“JJ, Ryo was here first, and even if he hadn’t been, Dee’s just not into you.” Drake smiled kindly. “If it’s any consolation, you’re not alone; my love life sucks too. Can’t seem to hold on to a girl no matter what I do. C’mon, we’ve caught a new case; we should get to work on that before we have the Chief on our backs. Last thing either of us needs today is to get chewed out by the boss.”

“I suppose. What’ve we got?”

“Homicide; vic’s some guy worked in insurance, for all the good it’s done him. Four suspects; his wife, mistress, girlfriend, and secretary.”

“Oh, lovely. I can’t even get one person to love me, but he had four, and now I get to figure out which one killed him. Must be my lucky day.”

“Sarcasm, JJ? That’s not like you.”

JJ stopped, halfway out of his seat, and frowned. “You’re right; it’s not, and there’s no point me getting all gloomy. I need Dee to see exactly what he’s missing. Not a mopey puddle of gloom but JJ Adams, cute, funny, and endlessly desirable. After all, why would he give me a second look if I’m sitting here all sad and depressed?” JJ stood up, straightened his immaculate designer outfit, and flashed his best smile Dee’s way. “See you later, Mr Studly! Drake and I have an exciting new case; maybe I could tell you all about it tonight over dinner!”

He might as well not have said anything because Dee didn’t so much as glance his way, but JJ didn’t deflate until he was in the elevator with Drake and the doors were closing. Sometimes loving Dee was just so hard, always yearning for whatever crumbs the object of his adoration threw his way.

Back in the squad room, Dee was completely oblivious to JJ’s disappointment, focused solely on his partner, his lover… It was difficult not to break into a goofy grin at the thought. They’d only been together for just over a month, but Dee already couldn’t imagine his life without Ryo in it. Sure, they were complete opposites, but maybe that was what made them fit together so well.

At work as well as in their private lives, Ryo was the steadying influence that balanced out Dee’s impulsive nature, the rational one who reined in Dee’s flights of fantasy, the calm, quiet voice of reason when Dee’s temper got the better of him, which it did on a regular basis, because criminals were assholes. In short, Ryo was everything Dee needed.

“Earth to Dee. What’re you thinking about? Looked like you were miles away.”

“Hm?” Dee smiled at Ryo. “Oh, just countin’ my blessings. I don’t ever want to take what we have for granted, babe. I know exactly how lucky I am, but it doesn’t hurt to take a few moments every day to remind myself.”

“A few moments? You’ve been sitting there staring at me for at least half an hour when you’re meant to be working. Don’t think I haven’t noticed.”

Dee shrugged. “I’ve got a lot of blessings to count.”

“Well, just don’t let the Chief catch you or you’ll land us both in trouble.”

“How d’you work that out?”

“I’m your partner; I’m supposed to keep you in line.”

Dee grinned. “And you’re doin’ a terrific job; I hang on your every word.”

“You’re such an ass. Work please, Dee.”

“Your wish is my command.” Dee flipped open the top folder on his desk. “Oh joy; autopsy results.”

“Which one?” Ryo craned his neck, trying to see.

“The Friedrichsen case. Y’know, maybe we should go over this together.” So saying, he snatched up the file and scooted his chair around to Ryo’s desk, sliding in beside his baby.

No place else in the universe he’d rather be.
