The last new member of the 27th Precinct’s Serious Crimes Unit had been JJ, something that, at the time, Dee hadn’t exactly been overjoyed about. He was fine with JJ’s presence now that he wasn’t the object of the other detective’s obsessive adoration, but for a couple of years things had been a bit tense around the squad room.
Now, however, Frank Archer, a senior detective on the squad who usually worked third shift, had taken early retirement, and today the rest of the squad, or at least those working this shift, were about to meet his replacement.
“Hope we don’t get some lamebrain rookie detective,” Dee muttered.
“Should I feel insulted?” Ryo raised an eyebrow.
“Not talkin’ about you, babe. You hit the ground runnin’.”
“Had to, just to keep up.”
“True. When’s the new guy gonna show up?”
“She’s already here. Detective Sandra Moreno.”
Dee spun around to face a striking Latino woman. He grinned. “’Bout time we got a bit more diversity around here. We already got straight, gay, bi, Asian, a black guy, and an Irishman; been wonderin’ when we’d get a woman.”
“You got something against women detectives?”
“Not a thing. Welcome to the squad.”
