“We’re meant to be on vacation; figured by now I’d be loungin’ by the pool, workin’ on my tan,” Dee muttered, a sour expression on his face as he stared out the window of their hotel room. “Always thought Florida was hot and sunny. If this keeps up, we’d have been better off stayin’ in New York.”
Ryo glanced up from the color brochure he was browsing through, looking for things to do on their ten days away.
“I doubt anyone’s happy about this, but we can’t control the weather. I wouldn’t want to be out in that anyway.”
According to the forecast, the hurricane was supposed to miss the resort they were staying at by at least fifty miles, but it had unexpectedly changed direction during the night and now this section of the Florida coastline was getting hammered by high winds and lashing rain.
As hurricanes went, it wasn’t especially serious; wind speeds weren’t expected to exceed eighty miles per hour, and as long as the storm didn’t change direction again it should be past them in under forty-eight hours, but as long as it raged everyone was being urged to stay indoors for their own safety. The winds were strong enough to bring down branches and even whole trees while the rain was cutting visibility to at best a few yards.
By contrast, the hotel was air-conditioned and comfortable, despite the howling wind and the drumming of rain against the windowpanes.
Dee turned from his gloomy perusal of the world outside the windows; it wasn’t like he could see much of it anyway thanks to the sheets of rain billowing past and the endless streams of water running down the glass. He frowned at his lover.
“Aren’t you disappointed? As I recall, you were lookin’ forward to enjoyin’ the hotel pool and the sandy beaches as much as I was.”
“I still am. So we have to stay inside for a couple of days; at least we have room service, the hotel restaurant, bar, and shopping arcade are open, and there’s a spa. Might be other entertainments in the convention rooms as well; says here they do that sometimes in bad weather. Dance classes, cabaret shows, games… Should be plenty to do until the storm’s over.”
“Not the same though, is it?” Dee moped. “So much for blue skies and sun-drenched beaches.” He threw himself heavily onto the bed, causing the mattress to bounce so much it bucked him straight onto the floor.
Ryo burst out laughing. “Serves you right.”
Scrambling to his feet, Dee joined in. “Yeah, I guess I deserved that.” He grinned at his lover. “Nice big, bouncy bed; it would be a shame not to make the most of it…”
Ryo smiled back. “I suppose it would.” Tossing his brochure aside, he let his partner drag him onto the bed, and the storm raging outside was soon forgotten, nothing more than unimportant background noise.
OoOoO
A little less than forty-eight hours later, the two men awoke to brilliant sunshine and clear blue skies, something Dee definitely approved of.
“Now that’s what I call vacation weather! Right after breakfast I’m goin’ down to the pool, grab me a beach chair, and soak up some of that Florida sunshine.”
Ryo was happy to agree; it would be good to get outside after two days stuck indoors, and he intended to make good use of the hotel pool. He seldom got the chance to swim back home.
Returning to their room after breakfast to change into trunks and get their towels, Dee was lavish with the high-factor waterproof sunscreen to protect Ryo’s fair skin from burning, slathering it over every inch of his lover’s body that might possibly be exposed to the sun’s rays, but he used a different kind of lotion on himself with the intention of returning to New York with a healthy golden tan darkening his olive skin.
As soon as they reached the poolside, Dee claimed one of the beach chairs and stretched out on his back. Ryo settled beside him with a book and read for a while, not wanting to go in the water too soon after breakfast, but before long the temptation was too much, and he abandoned his book in favour of a refreshing swim.
After an hour or so of baking himself both front and back, and starting to get a bit too hot, Dee decided to join his lover in the cool water of the pool, diving in and swimming a few laps just for the fun of it before turning on his back to float, eyes closed, enjoying the contrast between the heat of the sun shining down on him and the coolness of the water that buoyed him up. This was the life for him! New York seemed a million miles away.
He might have remained floating in a happy haze indefinitely, but when the pool started to get a bit too crowded for his tastes, he returned to his beach chair, stretching out to drowse in the sun, Ryo back beside him again, nose buried in his book. Dee sighed in contentment; this was the best thing about being on vacation, not having to do anything or go anywhere if he didn’t want to. Unlike at the precinct, nobody was gonna get mad at him for taking a nap.
Dee awoke some time later to Ryo shaking him, dripping wet, obviously having been in the pool again. “Dee! Wake up!”
“Huh? Whassamatter?” he mumbled drowsily, mildly annoyed at being roused. Then he became aware of a burning sensation; his skin felt like it was on fire. “Ow! What the hell?”
“Idiot!” Ryo snapped. “Why didn’t you use more lotion after your swim? Look at you; you’re all sunburnt! And you say I’m an airhead!”
Dee looked down at himself; his chest and stomach, legs and arms were scarlet. “Crap! I thought it was waterproof!”
“Mine is, but yours isn’t. Didn’t you read the label?”
There was no reply from Dee; he didn’t need to say anything, the expression on his face said it all.
“Maybe next time you’ll be more careful. You’re going to look like a peeling lobster by the time we head home.” Ryo picked up his own bottle of sunscreen, pouring some into his hand and starting to smear it on Dee’s sore chest. “Hopefully this will help.”
Dee winced despite his lover’s gentle touch then uttered a despairing groan. “All I wanted was a tan!”
“Doesn’t look like you’ll be getting one. Still, there’s always next year.” Ryo held the bottle out to his partner. “You can finish your front while I get your back; you don’t want that getting burned too.”
Sitting up, Dee started applying sunscreen to his burnt legs and feet. “Where’s a nice, friendly hurricane when I need one?” he grumbled.
Ryo laughed. “I thought you told me you wanted sunshine.”
“Yeah, I did, but I think I’ve changed my mind.”
The End
