“So, what, you’ve just suddenly gone over to the other side?” Ted was trying, so far unsuccessfully, to get his head around the fact that Drake, who was always getting dumped by one woman or another, was now in a relationship with another man.

Drake frowned. “Not exactly, I mean it’s not that I’ve suddenly stopped liking women, it’s more… I dunno, I guess I’m like Dee, bisexual, I just never explored this side of my sexuality before. Now I wish I’d taken the plunge years ago, except then I might not have gotten together with JJ.” He shrugged, grinning. “All that time wasted, dating girls who just didn’t get me, when my perfect match was sitting right across from me. Funny how things work out, isn’t it?”

“You’re telling me. First Dee snags Ryo, now you and JJ are dating… I’m starting to feel like the token straight guy on the squad.”

“What about Marty? He’s married with three kids.”

“Right, ‘course.” Ted grinned ruefully; how could he have forgotten the guy he worked with every day? Just went to show how much recent events had thrown him off balance. Not that he was homophobic or anything, the people he worked with were among his closest friends and he didn’t give a damn whether they were gay, bi, straight, or whatever; they were great guys. It was just that he was going to miss knowing that there was one person who had worse luck with relationships than he did. Both Drake and JJ were positively glowing, all loved up, and Dee and Ryo were just as bad, even though Ryo was less demonstrative than the others at work.

Ted himself had just gotten dumped by his latest girlfriend a couple of weeks ago, and it still smarted.

“Don’t feel bad, Ted,” JJ said brightly. “Gloria wasn’t right for you; anyone could see that.”

“Yeah? Anyone who isn’t me, apparently. I thought things were going great with us, and then suddenly it’s over. Never saw THAT coming.” Ted sighed. “You’ve all got someone special and here I am, loveless.”

“Maybe you should take a leaf outta Drake’s book, try datin’ a guy. You might even find ya like it,” Dee teased his long-time friend. He, Ted, and Drake had been in uniform together. “I could fix ya up if ya want, I know a guy who’s into redheads.”

“Thanks but no thanks, I’m not like you guys; I’m one hundred percent straight.”

“That’s what I said before Dee proved me wrong,” Ryo pointed out.

“Yeah, but you were just in denial. You know you wanted me all along, admit it.” Dee’s grin bordered on the smug. “One taste of yours truly and ya couldn’t get enough!”

“Whoa!” Ted held up both hands, taking a step back. “Little too much information there, dude!”

Ryo blushed. “He didn’t mean it like that. But he’s right, I was in denial, for a very long time, too scared to admit the truth even to myself. If not for Dee I might never have accepted who I am.”

“Well I’m happy for ya, all of ya, but I don’t want setting up with no guy.”

Dee smirked. “You ever change your mind, let me know.”

The Chief’s voice bellowed from his office. “What is this, a social club? Get your sorry asses back to work before I bust you all back down to traffic duty!”

“Nothin’ sorry about my ass,” Dee muttered, grinning, as everyone grabbed their coffee mugs and headed for their own desks.

“Yeah, the only sorry ass in this place is mine,” Ted sighed. “I gotta get me a date, pronto. With a girl,” he added, glancing sidelong at Dee. Unlike his friends, he had no intention of switching sides. He liked the ladies way too much.
