“I’ve lost the damned dog!”

It wasn’t the greeting Ryo had been expecting on his return from work, laden with groceries, but his weariness from the long day evaporated when Dee accosted him before he’d even reached the front stoop of their building.

“Lost him? How?”

“I was taking out the trash, and I thought I’d shut the apartment door behind me, was sure I had, but then old Mrs Witek on the second floor asked if I’d mind taking her trash bag down too because her arthritis is actin’ up, and you know how hard it is to get away once she starts talkin’, so it took longer than I expected and when I got back upstairs the door was wide open and the stupid dog was gone! He must’ve wandered off, gotten down the stairs and out the building ‘cause I’ve searched everywhere and he’s just gone! God, what if he gets hit by a car, or dognapped or somethin’? We promised Mrs Holloway he’d be safe with us, and now I’ve frickin’ lost him!”

“Dee, don’t panic; calm down. He’s a smart dog and he’s wary of moving cars; I doubt he’ll go wandering into traffic. His name and our address are on his collar, and he’s microchipped so if someone finds him there are plenty of ways for them to figure out who he belongs to. Look, give me a few minutes, I’ll just take the groceries upstairs and put them away, then I’ll help you search. Okay?”

Dee nodded, calming a little. “Okay, but don’t take too long. Maybe one of us should drive around the neighbourhood. It’s been at least half an hour since he got out, probably longer; who knows how far he might’ve gotten in that time?”

“Good idea, I’ll bring my car keys down. Just keep looking and I’ll be right back.” Ryo headed up the stoop with his grocery bags and through the building’s front door. The elevator was working, so he used that instead of taking the stairs; he was going to need all his energy for the search. Dick the miniature dachshund was such a small dog, and truthfully Ryo was just as worried about him as Dee was. He’d been staying with them for hardly more than a week! Both he and Dee were still adjusting to having a dog in the apartment and Ryo had a horrible feeling that leaving the door open by accident wasn’t the last mistake they were going to make with regards to their house guest. They still had a lot to learn about being dog owners.

Up on the fourth floor, Ryo dug out his key and let himself into the apartment, heading straight for the kitchen and dumping his bags on the countertop before unpacking them and stowing their contents in the refrigerator and cupboards. Stripping off his suit jacket, he took it through to the bedroom, intending to pull on a warmer coat from the closet before going outside again. There was no knowing how long the search for the missing dog would take; it would be getting dark soon, and at this time of year the temperature could drop quite sharply once the sun set. He’d better take Dee’s coat with him too, and a couple of flashlights.

Pushing the door open, Ryo stopped dead not two steps into the bedroom. There on the floor by the laundry basket, stretched out on a pile of dirty clothes, was a familiar small brown lump, snoozing contentedly. Dee had obviously been intending to do the laundry after taking out the trash, and Dick, who wasn’t normally allowed in the bedroom, must have followed him in there without being noticed and gotten shut in.

“Naughty dog,” Ryo chided, bending to stroke him. “Do you have any idea the panic you’ve caused?” Dick yawned and wagged his tail, and Ryo shook his head; it was impossible to be cross with him and it hadn’t been the dog’s fault anyway. Pulling out his phone, he called Dee.

“I’ve found the dog.”

“You have? Where? Is he okay?”

“He’s fine, he’s in our bedroom, taking a nap on the dirty laundry. Must have snuck in there when you weren’t looking. You probably should’ve checked the apartment before panicking and racing off to look for him!” Ryo chided, although he knew he probably would have reacted the same way as his lover.

“I thought I had, just didn’t think to look in there because the bedroom door was closed and the front door was wide open.” Dee sighed. “I’m an idiot.”

“Sometimes,” Ryo agreed, “but it could just as easily have been me. We just have to accept that we’re going to make the occasional mistake. At least he’s safe.”

“Yeah, I guess that’s what matters.”
