“Here you go, detectives.” Hot coffee and toasted sandwiches were set down on the table in front of them, just what Dee and Ryo needed on a chilly day like this one. “It’s on the house.”
“No way, Bernie,” Dee told the owner of the small café. “You work damned hard, and small businesses have a tough enough time makin’ ends meet without you givin’ out freebies. We’ll pay, and tip the staff. We can afford to, and you guys deserve it.”
“You two sure ain’t like most of the cops who come in here.” Bernie smiled at them. “Most think free food is a perk of the job.”
Dee smiled wryly. “It’s a slippery slope. First ya accept free coffee, the occasional free meal, and then it’s a few bucks changin’ hands here and there for lookin’ the other way over minor infractions. Before anyone knows it, you’re acceptin’ bribes to misplace a piece of evidence, or to lie in court, and when ya finally come to your senses, you’re in too deep to get out. I’ve seen it happen; didn’t end well, so…”
“I wish all cops were as honest as you two.”
“So do I,” Dee replied.
