Ryo was suffering from a bad cold and after a long and tiring day at work had decided to take some medicine and get an early night. Dee, being the caring and considerate partner he was, had decided to join him, knowing that Ryo always slept best when he had Dee’s warmth to cuddle up to. If Dee wound up catching his lover’s cold then so be it; he doubted he could avoid it anyway, what with them living and working together.

The meds Ryo had taken quickly knocked him out, but since it was still too early for Dee to be feeling particularly sleepy, he sat propped up against the pillows, reading a book Ryo had recommended, and listening to his lover’s soft snuffles and snores. The only time Ryo ever snored was when he had a cold, and Dee found he didn’t mind. It was sort of cute, although he was grateful he didn’t have to put up with it all night every night; that would get a bit wearing.

While he read, Dee munched cookies, a late supper to make up for their early dinner. There was no way he could last for more than twelve hours between meals; he needed something to keep him going until morning, and he knew Ryo wouldn’t mind as long as he cleared up any crumbs.

Dee was comfortable, warm, and relaxed, enjoying his book, but after an hour or so he was beginning to feel pleasantly drowsy and decided he should probably settle down to sleep once he’d finished the chapter and his last cookie. He and Ryo both had work tomorrow and even though he wasn’t the one who was sick, Dee needed his rest as much as his partner did.

The peace and quiet of their bedroom was shattered when beside him Ryo abruptly sat bolt upright in bed and yelled “SEX!”

Freezing in place, cookie halfway to his open mouth, Dee stared at his lover in consternation. Ryo’s eyes were open but unfocused, gazing sightlessly across the dimly lit room. As far as De could tell, he didn’t seem to be awake. Then he sneezed, flopped back onto his pillow, and started to snore again.

Dee still hadn’t moved.

Finally, he blinked like he was coming out of a trance. Without looking away from Ryo, he set his cookie back on the plate that sat on the nightstand, closed his book, and put that aside too.

“Well, thanks for that,” he muttered sarcastically, scowling at his lover, who was now sleeping blissfully beside him as if he didn’t have a care in the world. “Now I’m gonna be thinkin’ about sex all night, and with you not in a fit state for much of anything.” Dee knew he could take care of himself if needs be, although obviously it wouldn’t be the same, but he didn’t want to disturb Ryo’s badly needed rest, and he didn’t want to get out of their cosy bed either. Sighing, he rearranged his pillows, settled down, pulled the covers snugly around him, and closed his eyes, determined to at least try to get some sleep himself, but his mind was in a whirl. What the heck had Ryo been dreaming about? “Better have been me, otherwise there’ll be trouble. Gotta ask him about that in the mornin’.”

The night dragged past, but morning eventually arrived, the alarm clock went off, and as he felt Ryo stir beside him, Dee was tempted to pretend he was still sleeping. He had gotten some sleep, off and on, but he felt far from rested. Maybe he was coming down with his partner’s cold, or maybe it was just his disturbed night.

Ryo looked bleary-eyed too, but that was definitely his cold. He sat up, snuffled, sneezed, blew his nose, and kicked the covers back, reaching to shake Dee’s shoulder.

“Dee, you awage? Tibe to ged ub.”

“Do I have to?” Even to his own ears Dee sounded petulant.

Peering at his lover though watery eyes, Ryo was obviously concerned. “You feelig ogay? You didn’ gadge by code, did you?”

Dee sighed and sat up. “I’m fine, just didn’t get much sleep is all.”

“Sorry. Was id by znorin’?”

The last thing Dee had wanted was to make his lover feel guilty over something he couldn’t control. “No babe, I already told ya the snorin’ doesn’t bother me.” He patted Ryo’s leg, smiled wryly. “I would kinda like to know what the hell you were dreamin’ about last night though.”

“Dreamin’?” Ryo frowned, shaking his head. “Don’ rememmer dreamin’.”

“Seriously?”

Ryo just looked curiously at Dee. “Ab I missin’ somethin’?”

“You really don’t remember? One minute you were fast asleep, then you sat up, yelled ‘sex’ at the top of your voice, and went back to sleep again.”

“I did?” Ryo’s eyebrows shot up in surprise and a hint of a blush tinged his cheeks.

“Yep.”

“Why’d I do dat?”

“How should I know? I can’t look inside your head. But trust me, it happened. I wasn’t dreamin’, hadn’t even gone to sleep yet.”

“Huh. Ogay, thad’s a bit… weird.”

“You’re tellin’ me. Ya might wanna go easy on those cold meds if that’s the effect they’re gonna have on ya. Left me feelin’ a bit frustrated; you’ve got no idea what it’s like gettin’ somethin’ like that stuck in your head when you’re tryin’ to sleep. It was the only thing I could think about.”

“Poor Dee.” Ryo rested his hand comfortingly on his lover’s thigh. “I’ll make id ub t’you when I ged rid of dis code. Promise.”

“Yeah? I’ll hold ya to that.”

“For now, maybe I could gib you a hand id the shower…”

It might almost have been a romantic offer, if Ryo hadn’t spoiled it with a violent sneezing fit, the hand resting on Dee’s leg clenching into a fist, fingers digging in, and no doubt leaving bruises. Dee winced at the thought of what could happen to a sensitive part of his anatomy if Ryo sneezed at an inopportune moment; it effectively killed his burgeoning desire.

“I appreciate the offer, but… think I’ll take a rain-check.” Paradise would have to wait until there was no longer any risk of him accidentally losing his favorite body part. Some chances just weren’t worth taking.

Releasing his vicelike grip on Dee’s leg, Ryo gave an apologetic smile. “Sorry. Did I ‘urt you?”

Dee smiled reassuringly. “Nah, I’m fine, don’t worry about it. What’s a few bruises? Go shower; I’ll make the bed.” A few more days and hopefully Ryo’s cold would be gone, then they could get back to their normal energetic activities in bed. In the meantime, Dee would be fine, trusting to his own hand for his pleasure. It was just a whole lot safer that way.
